What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Subway Series games are lauded for their electric atmosphere and the intense, passionate fan base, making for a quintessential New York sports experience. While the energy and views are often praised, some visitors note that concession prices are high and getting tickets can be competitive.
"I don’t even know where to begin. I came across the Staten Island Winter Wonderland ad on Groupon. I read the reviews, it seemed like something that would be fun. Most importantly it seemed like an event for all ages. That was not the case, this is an event for kids. The ice skating rink was made of plastic. This was my first time attempting to ice skate. The plastic material made it very difficult to do so. I thought they’d be real ginger bread in the Santa’s Workshop, but it was just a tiny paper looking cookie. The rides were 3,4 and 5 tickets each. I spent $60 on a booklet of 40 tickets I believe. However I went home with more than half of the tickets, because the rides just weren’t age appropriate for me. Kids would probably enjoy this event, but it’s not for adults. I still took a few pics and tried to make the most of my time there."

"Love Being Invited By Friends To A Game For The Staten Island Yankees! Always A Great Time With Friends! Food Prices So So! But, This Night The Game Was Called Before It Even Started Because Of Poor Drainage In The Infield Area From The Early Morning Rain! A Bit Of A Let Down, But Still Had A Good Time With Friends!"

"I went to games at The Ballpark at St.George twice this year.
One was a soggy night, a weekday night, with the threat of heavy rain looming but not materializing. You'd expect a smaller crowd than normal and it was small.
People in general just aren't excited to come here, so they don't.
The second time was a Sunday afternoon near the end of the season--a nice day, with both teams fighting to make the playoffs. There were lots of fans for both teams at the game. It was a good game too.
It is pretty convenient to get here--it is a short walk after a 1/2 hour boat ride from southern manhattan.
On the second day a friend left a ticket for me at the will call window. The ticket wasn't there when I went to pick it up. Three other people said they saw him leave the ticket. The friend later said the sales employee doesnt like him, for whatever reason, and has done this to him a few times. Ask all your relatives if the ticket sales guy looked cross-eyed at them before leaving a ticket at will call, because this guy holds grudges and will lose the ticket."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
To make the experience smoother, consider booking tickets in advance to secure good seats, especially if you want to be closer to the action or have a better view for kids. Utilize public transportation to avoid parking hassles. Pack light, as bag policies are strict. While the rivalry can be intense, most fans are respectful, and the focus for families is often on the fun of the game itself.
💰 Budget Travelers
To save on food costs, consider eating before or after the game at more affordable local eateries. While stadium concessions are part of the experience, they are notoriously pricey. Bringing an empty water bottle to refill at water fountains can also help cut down on costs.

The Subway Series: A NYC Institution
These games are often characterized by their intensity, with every pitch and play amplified by the crowd's roar. Players often feel the pressure and excitement of playing in such a high-stakes environment. The series has produced countless memorable moments, from dramatic walk-off home runs to heated on-field confrontations, solidifying its place in baseball lore.
Attending a Subway Series game is an immersive experience into New York's sports culture. It's a chance to witness firsthand the deep-seated passion that fans have for their respective teams and to be part of a tradition that has captivated the city for decades.
Navigating to the Ballparks
Yankee Stadium is equally well-served. The B, D, and 4 subway lines all stop at the 161st Street-Yankee Stadium station, putting you right at the ballpark's doorstep. For those coming from further north in the Bronx or Westchester, Metro-North Railroad offers direct service to the stadium station, providing a comfortable and efficient ride.
For a more scenic, albeit indirect, approach to baseball in the city, consider the Staten Island Ferry. While it doesn't go directly to either major league stadium, it offers stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty. This was particularly relevant when the Staten Island Yankees played at the Ballpark at St. George, a short walk from the ferry terminal.
Fan Culture and Rivalry Dynamics
It's important to note that while the rivalry is intense, it's generally good-natured, especially when fans from different boroughs interact. However, some TikToks and social media posts highlight moments of playful taunting and strong opinions about players, like the reactions to Juan Soto.
A common piece of advice from travelers is to pick a side and stick with it. Wearing both a Mets and Yankees hat is considered a faux pas in New York, and you might get some playful ribbing for it. The energy of the crowd, the shared experience of cheering for your team, and the friendly competition are all part of what makes the Subway Series so special.
