Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning, otherworldly beauty of Fern Canyon, describing it as a must-see natural wonder. The unique experience of hiking through a fern-draped creek bed is consistently praised. However, be prepared for wet conditions and challenging road access, which can deter some.

"Fabulous trail surrounded on all sides by beautiful ferns! Be aware that you will get wet on this trail. Bring water shoes and roll up your pants. We didn't and got very wet. Also, you will have to drive through water to get to the trailhead. Make sure your car can handle it before attempting to go. The road to get there is narrow and windy, but it's worth it!!! Such beautiful ferns and trees! Depending on the time of year you go, you may need a reservation. Make sure to check and be prepared."

"Fern Canyon is awesome and a trail that is very different from most you will have hiked previously. You are literally hiking through a creek bed! You are walking in water so you will get wet. Based on yesterdays conditions, im not sure that you could stay dry while doing it! Water is roughly 6 inches in many places...deeper in others. You have to climb over and under logs and other things as well. But oh so beautiful. You can start down the canyon and end along the rim as its a loop. Irs only a mile, its a short easy hike but worth doing.

You have to drive your car across 3 stream crossings. 2 are small and easy...the third is a little more intimidating. We had read 6 inches of water, it was more than that for sure! Going in the rocks felt pretty loose and mushy...coming out our crossing spot was more firm. Think about your vehicle choice!

Fern canyon does require a permit and costs $12.00 but if you can secure one...its worth seeing! You are also right at Gold Bluffs beach which is nice. This is not a spot for swimming but its perfect for lunch!

Ps...i wore croc flip flop sandals through fern canyon hike (crazy, I know!) But they were perfect! My husband had wading boots...also worked out well. Regular sneakers, if you dont have a second pair...dont do it!"

"This is Fern Canyon Trail in Van Damme State Park near Mendocino. You do not need a permit or to make a reservation. There is another Fern Canyon Trail in Northern California that does require this. You do need to pay the $8 day use fee if you are not camping there.

From the campground, the trail gradually goes up the mountain through the redwood forest along Little River until you get to the pygmy forest. The pygmy forest Trail is a loop if you want to extend your hike. It is interesting if you’ve never seen trees affected by bad soil.

If you get there early, you can park near the trailhead. Otherwise, you will need to park at the beach and walk in.

You can also start at the pygmy forest and walk all the way down to the ocean if you have someone to shuttle you back up or vice versa. It is 2.7 miles one way. There is a wheelchair accessible boardwalk in the Pygmy forest.

The bridges have been repaired since the big storms in 2022."
