Visitors often praise the charming atmosphere, especially during the holidays, and the affordable, insightful bakery tours that include samples. Many appreciate the wide selection of gourmet gifts and the brand's historical significance. However, some long-time customers have noted a decline in fruit quality compared to previous decades, with seasonal stone fruits sometimes being disappointing.
"I recommend the tour! We had a delightful visit and learned about the company history, passion for their products and how they care for their employees. I was surprised to learn they own their orchards and make many of their products in house. Plus samples!"

"Would recommend touring the bakery and candy factory. You get a first person view of everything being made, such as Moose Munch and gift baskets. Price per person is very low in the $5 range. Comes with a small sample."

"I have been a loyal customer of Harry and David since my Grandmother was alive. It was family tradition to send Maverick Pears to her, and my Aunt. Then they would do the same. So I know that their products were once quality and was excited to show my cousin the store in Medford. He had never been there nor heard of Harry and David.
Well more forward about 40 years and the quality of the fruit at least has dropped dramatically. I was in Medford from Brookings, OR recently and saw some "Gift Peaches" that were only $4.00 a box and beautifully presented. What an amazing deal I thought. I purchased a box for myself and one as a special gift for my neighbors. They looked so beautiful. Unfortunately, they were actually inedible! I tried to ripen them on my counter for two days as they were hard as rocks. But rather than ripen they rotted. So I then tried to ripen them in my fridge. Same thing happened. They rotted and were not only not good but they could not be eaten. I had to toss them out. I was mortified that I had gifted these peaches to my neighbors so I went over and apologized to them for giving them such truly awful fruit. Before I could apologize my neighbor said their peaches also rotted. When I called the store to complain (first complaint in over 40 years) I was told that "stone fruits are iffy this time of year". Well if they are iffy then why did you sell them? Could you not take one peach out and attempt to ripen them and see the results. I am truly disappointed in Harry and David and more so the response that buying their stone fruits this time of year was "iffy". They were kind enough to credit me the $8.00. It wasn't the cost that upset me as they were very, very cheap but the fact that these peaches while gorgeous in the box could not be salvaged in any manner to eat them. And that Harry and David would sell "iffy" products. My Grandmother used to count on the quality of your products and felt so special to be able to gift your pears and be able to afford your pears on a widow's pension with eleven children.
Edit: They did eventually refund my $8.00 which i appreciated."

The Harry & David Experience: More Than Just a Store
The atmosphere is particularly enchanting during the holiday season, transforming the village into a festive wonderland. This seasonal charm draws many visitors annually, making it a tradition for some. While the core offerings revolve around high-quality gift baskets, fresh fruit, and gourmet foods, the overall experience is enhanced by the company's commitment to showcasing its heritage and production.
It's worth noting that while the brand is synonymous with quality, especially its pears, some travelers have noted that fruit quality can be variable depending on the season. Events like 'Peachaplooza' in August offer a chance to purchase fruit at great prices, though visitors are advised to be aware of seasonal nuances.
Navigating Fruit Quality and Seasonal Offerings
However, as with any agricultural product, fruit quality can be subject to seasonal variations and environmental factors. Some customer reviews have pointed out inconsistencies, especially with stone fruits, noting that they can sometimes be 'iffy' or fail to ripen properly. This has led to disappointment for some long-time customers who recall a consistent high standard from decades past.
For visitors interested in purchasing fruit, it's advisable to inquire about the current season's offerings and any specific recommendations from staff. Events like 'Peachaplooza' in August offer a more budget-friendly way to enjoy peaches, with the fruit sold by the pound. Being prepared with your own containers for such events can enhance the shopping experience.
