What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Joseph McDowell Catawba Greenway's scenic beauty, particularly the tranquil Catawba River views and abundant wildlife sightings. The well-maintained paved path is praised for its accessibility for walking, running, and biking, with the historical cemetery loop offering a unique point of interest. Some minor drawbacks include the limited restroom facilities (porta-johns only) and an unpaved parking area at one end.
"In our continued search to find new places to walk or hike🚶♂️ 🚶♀️, my wife and I decided to try this greenway in McDowell County.
The greenway is an out and back type paved trail with parking on either end. Total walk out and back is around 3.5 miles if you do the loop offshoot, which takes you out and around a large hill with a historical cemetery/monuments located at the top of the hill. This small cemetery is accessible by walking up a fairly steep gravel trail.
The main greenway meanders alongside the Catawba River, which makes for a rather scenic walk. We saw turtles 🐢, squirrels 🐿 and birds along our 🐦 🐦⬛ walk.
There are several benches and lookouts along the walk. All in all, a nice place for a casual walk or a strenuous jog.
My only real negative is there are no public restroom structures only porta-johns...and the parking area we parked at is not paved. The other parking area is.
👍👍👍👍"

"Absolutely love this greenway! The area is so beautiful! Easily accessible, easy to walk. It is a beautiful, tree lined paved path that runs along the Catawba River. There are two docks for fishing or viewing the river, and plenty of spots to access the riverbank to fish. Tubing guides are nearby if you want to ride the river. It's a joy to catch a glimpse of the deer, rabbits, egrets, or wild turkey feeding along the banks of the river or one of the fields along the path. The greenway is my happy place, my place to unwind and destress."

"Beautiful area for walking, running, biking, even skating, and fishing. Absolutely love the greenway. An easy 1 3/4 mile (approximately) from one end to the other. There's always a chance you'll get to see some splendid wildlife like deer, cranes, or rabbits, and frogs that serenade your evening walk. It is a nice paved walkway and is well maintained. Very enjoyable!"

Exploring the Historical Cemetery Loop
This historical aspect adds a layer of depth to the greenway experience, distinguishing it from a typical paved trail. While the main greenway is easily accessible for all, the cemetery loop requires a bit more effort, making it a choice for those who enjoy a slight challenge. The contrast between the smooth paved path and the rugged trail to the cemetery is quite striking.
Wildlife Encounters Along the Catawba River
Beyond the common sightings, many have also been delighted to spot deer grazing in the fields and rabbits hopping along the banks. The river itself is a lively ecosystem, and the greenway provides excellent vantage points for observation. The presence of these creatures adds a dynamic and engaging element to any walk or run, making it a true nature escape. Remember to observe wildlife from a distance and avoid disturbing their natural behavior.
