The Manitou Incline is no joke! Take more water than you think you need, electrolytes, snacks! It’s an amazing experience and you will be proud of yourself. 2,768 stairs up, takes about 2 to 4 hours depending on your physical condition. People are so kind on the trail and help pump you up! My loud breathing and grunts are bonus for watching til the end! Ha

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Manitou Cliff Dwellings to be an educational experience, particularly appreciating the museum's collection of ancient artifacts and the scenic mountain views. While some note the dwellings are reconstructions, the site offers a valuable glimpse into Ancestral Puebloan life and a pleasant stop for families and history enthusiasts. Reddit+2

"Informative. Dwellings are all in a single continous structure. The expedition (self guided) is a bit lackluster for me but an educational experience nonetheless. Great gift shop with an expansive assortment of items. Mountain views are phenomenal. A few images of the shop contents are definitely not all inclusive."

"Unfortunately we went when it was a flash flood, so it would probably be more enjoyable in nicer weather. However, I loved it! So interesting to learn about such a different time, and there’s so much history there. You buy tickets at the gate, and have access to the cliff dwellings/museum and cafe/gift shop. There’s also excellent views of the surrounding mountains."

Molly Cooper

"This is an honest review so don't judge me after you read this.
As a place to visit and learn about a cultures history and their survival I found it to be quite a yawning experience. I say this because some of the plaques that provided information about the area you were standing in didn't seem to match what was written.
The museum inside had some amazing artifacts and was far more interesting than the dwellings but again this is my review and you may find it exactly opposite.
Would I recommend visiting this attraction...yes...simply because you can learn about the Pueblo people and how hard life was for them. Is one visit in a lifetime good..It is for me."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Reconstruction of the Dwellings

The Manitou Cliff Dwellings are a fascinating, albeit reconstructed, glimpse into the lives of the Ancestral Puebloan people who inhabited the region around 1200 AD. It's important to note that these are not original, untouched structures found in situ. Instead, they were built in the early 20th century using rubble from original cliff dwelling sites that were being destroyed or dismantled elsewhere. This approach aimed to preserve the architectural style and provide an educational experience for visitors. Reddit+1

The site was developed by Dr. Edwin F. S. Allen, who sought to create an attraction that would educate the public about the ingenuity and resilience of these ancient peoples. The construction involved carefully piecing together stones and architectural elements to replicate the appearance of authentic cliff dwellings. While this method differs from archaeological preservation, it has allowed countless visitors to visualize and learn about the living conditions, societal structures, and daily routines of the Ancestral Puebloans. Instagram

Visitors can explore the various rooms, ceremonial spaces (like the Kiva, believed to be a symbolic entrance to the spiritual world), and understand how these structures provided shelter and protection. The accompanying museum further enhances the experience by showcasing genuine artifacts unearthed from prehistoric sites, offering a tangible connection to the past. InstagramReddit

Exploring the Museum and Artifacts

While the reconstructed dwellings offer a visual representation of ancient life, the museum at the Manitou Cliff Dwellings is where many visitors find the most profound educational value. This private museum houses an impressive collection of archaeological artifacts that provide direct evidence of the Ancestral Puebloan culture. These exhibits include a variety of tools used for hunting and crafting, intricate pottery showcasing their artistic skills, and weapons that speak to their survival strategies. Reddit

The museum's displays offer insights into the daily lives, rituals, and technological advancements of the people who once inhabited this region. You can see firsthand the objects they used, the art they created, and the challenges they faced. Many reviews highlight the museum's artifacts as being particularly compelling and informative, often more so than the reconstructed dwellings themselves. Reddit

This collection serves as a crucial complement to the architectural experience, grounding the visitor's understanding in tangible historical evidence. It allows for a deeper appreciation of the Ancestral Puebloan civilization and their enduring legacy. Reddit

Visitor Experience and Practical Tips

Visiting the Manitou Cliff Dwellings offers a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty. The site is designed for a self-guided tour, allowing visitors to explore the dwellings and museum at their own pace. Many find the experience educational and a good way to stretch their legs after a drive. Reddit The mountain views surrounding the dwellings are consistently praised, adding a scenic element to the historical exploration. Reddit

Practical advice from visitors often centers on being prepared for the weather, as Manitou Springs can experience sudden changes, including flash floods. Reddit While the dwellings themselves are a reconstruction, the museum's authentic artifacts are a significant draw for many. Reddit The on-site gift shop is also noted for its extensive selection of items. Reddit

It's worth noting that some visitors have expressed that the 'dwellings' themselves can feel a bit 'lackluster' or 'yawning' if one expects pristine, original structures. However, the consensus is that it remains an educational experience, particularly for those interested in learning about the Ancestral Puebloan culture and their survival methods. Reddit
