"about 2-2.5 hours up and down each.
i spent a good hour at the peak waiting for the fog to clear, it never quite did, but what views i did get were beautiful.

"Worth the hike. Great to use as a training run for larger hikes. When starting from the Newbury Park side, I can usually get roughly 10 miles and 3,000 ft. of gain in. Trail is a bit overgrown depending on the time of year. Being plenty of water as some sections are exposed. On a clear day, you can see Mt. Baldy, Catalina, and a couple of the Channel Islands. One of my all time favorites."

"Amazing trek!!! I do not recommend this to ordinary hikers but to adventurers, mountaineers and people looking for a good 6 hour workout. Summiting Boney (Tri Peaks is main trail terminus) is very satisfying to the soul. Bring lots of water, lots of snacks, a trash bag for your refuse so as to not ruin this beautiful wilderness, and a hat. Well worth the hardship"

Navigating the Trails
Many users recommend using apps like AllTrails to navigate, as trail markers can sometimes be sparse. The Newbury Park side is noted for offering longer, more strenuous hikes, potentially covering around 10 miles with significant elevation gain. The experience can be rewarding, with some hikers using it as a training run for larger expeditions.
Be prepared for varied conditions. While some sections are exposed and can get hot, others might be shaded. The climb down can be as challenging as the climb up due to the uneven terrain, but this is part of what makes the hike exciting for many.
Summit Views and Weather
However, the Santa Monica Mountains are notorious for their microclimates, and fog is a frequent visitor, especially in the mornings and evenings. Many reviewers and TikTok creators mention experiencing fog that obscured the views, sometimes for extended periods. This unpredictability means checking the weather forecast is crucial. If you're aiming for those iconic panoramic shots, a clear day is essential.
When the fog does clear, the experience can be truly magical, with some describing being 'above the clouds.' This makes the effort of the hike even more worthwhile. For photographers, the interplay of light and fog can create dramatic and unique photographic opportunities.
Preparing for the Challenge
Essential gear includes sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, as the rocky and uneven terrain can be treacherous. Bringing ample water is non-negotiable, as some sections are exposed and lack shade, making dehydration a real risk. Many recommend packing extra snacks to maintain energy levels throughout the 2-8 hour trek.
Consider wearing long sleeves and pants to protect against overgrown brush and potential scrapes from rocks. While the challenge is significant, the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit and the stunning views (weather permitting) make it a highly satisfying experience for those who are well-prepared.
