What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Theodore Payne Foundation for its exceptional selection of California native plants and its role as a premier resource for native gardening. The knowledgeable staff and inspirational demonstration garden are frequently highlighted as major strengths. However, a few reviews mention instances of less-than-ideal customer service from some employees, which contrasts with the overall positive and helpful reputation of the organization.
"The premier source of California native plants in LA, Theodore Payne has a wide variety of native plants and seeds in their nursery. They also have an established garden so you can browse the plants when they’re fully grown for inspiration. If you’re new to native plants then it’s good to view the garden, as the plants for sale are usually very young and it’s difficult to know what they’re going to look like if you’re unfamiliar with them. Each plant in the nursery has a very helpful sign with all the info you need to know, but ask the staff if you’re still not sure. They also offer classes here if you want to learn a lot more about native plant gardening."

"The plants and environment are terrific. The service was insulting, especially because most native plant places are run by such wonderful people. The whole time we were browsing, we listened to a loud posse of young women employees gossiping and dissing people, even slagging another employee after he walked away. When I asked help finding a plant, one of them, her feet literally stretched in front of her with ankles crossed where she sat, looked at me and drawled, "Well, I could show you if you want." Yikes. How did she get the job? Such a fine organization as Theodore Payne deserves better representatives."
Dana
"Great selection of native California plants. Organized by different habitat types (chaparral, riparian woodland, coastal sage, desert) & with signs explaining plant care & requirements, it's easy to find what you need for your garden & at inexpensive prices. The employees are knowledgeable & very helpful.
* During the COVID-19 pandemic, they are taking precautions with reservations of time slots to visit the nursery, brought their indoor store to outdoor stands, have signs all over to ensure patrons wear masks, & sanitizing stations throughout. They also offer online purchases with pick up as an option."

The Importance of California Native Plants
Choosing native plants supports a more sustainable and ecologically sound approach to gardening. Instead of fighting against the natural environment with thirsty, non-native species, embracing natives allows your garden to harmonize with the local ecosystem. This philosophy is central to the foundation's mission and is evident in their extensive nursery selection and demonstration garden.
Visitors can learn about specific native species, such as Eriogonum fasciculatum (California Buckwheat), which is a keystone plant for pollinators, or various native sages that offer beautiful blooms and aromatic foliage. The foundation's resources help gardeners understand which plants thrive in different microclimates and soil conditions found throughout Southern California.
Navigating the Nursery and Garden
Beyond the nursery, the demonstration garden is a living showcase of what native plants can achieve. Here, you can see mature specimens thriving, offering inspiration and a realistic preview of how your own garden might look. This is particularly helpful for those new to native gardening, as young plants in pots may not immediately convey their full aesthetic potential.
Staff at the foundation are a valuable resource. Many are highly knowledgeable about native plants and can offer personalized advice for your garden project. Don't hesitate to ask questions about plant selection, care, or even design ideas. Their expertise is a key part of the Theodore Payne experience.
Community and Conservation Efforts
Through workshops, classes, and events like the Spirit of the Chaparral holiday market, the foundation fosters a sense of community among gardeners, conservationists, and nature enthusiasts. These gatherings provide opportunities to learn, share knowledge, and connect with like-minded individuals who are passionate about preserving California's natural heritage.
Their work extends to educating the public about the importance of native ecosystems and the role that home gardens can play in supporting biodiversity. By providing access to native plants and the knowledge to grow them, the Theodore Payne Foundation empowers individuals to become stewards of their local environment.
