What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for LA pottery studios are mixed, with many praising the creative experience, friendly staff, and affordability. However, some customers have reported issues with customer service, particularly regarding rescheduling missed classes and inflexible policies. The quality of instruction and the studio facilities are generally well-regarded.
"If you have never done pottery before you need to take one of their classes, i did and I'm hooked. I became a member in December. Their place is very clean, they have lovely staff, the owner and manager Kelley are always so friendly. Skyler, one of the teachers, is my favorite. Even when he isn't teaching ill ask him for help with a question and he goes above and beyond to help me. I see him do this all the time with others. He is a gem. I truly love this place and hope it never goes anywhere. They are very affordable too! If you go to their website u can sign up for classes. Hope to see u there. :)
Here are some mugs i made!"

"I've taken two classes here so far. I think it's a great value, some great instructors. The community studio model may not be for everyone but I think it works great. Taking classes works best if you can dedicate one or two additional sessions per week, which gets you more throwing time and product for your money. They are open very late. Parking on the street has never been a problem."

"I signed up for a month of classes on the website, and chose The Pottery Studio as they seemed to have beautiful facilities. I normally don't like leaving reviews on things that are customer service based as I think it can detract from the qualities of an otherwise great establishment, however this studio's customer service is particularly awful and should be considered when making an assessment on classes.
I attended the first class. The teacher was rushed and it was harder to follow initially. The location was nice and the facility itself is big and beautiful.
I was unable to attend some other classes due to an unexpected work trip, and then my car being the victim of a smash and grab in LA, leaving me carless for a bit while it gets repaired. I offered to provide insurance proof of this issue. I reached out to handle the missing classes and find a solution, they are completely unwilling to offer solutions for this.
It appears that if you purchase and if something unexpected arises, you must repay for the entire course with a discount (50% off is what they offered me - so nearly $365 for a month of classes.)
My suggestion is either purchase the additional flexibility plan at $25 (which brings this one month of classes to $250) or go with a different studio, as the customer service leaves much to be desired as other yelpers have expressed.
This isn't a massive company, having great customer service for a Los Angeles based art studio does not feel like a big ask. Unfortunately in this case it is.
As of now my $ for my classes is being held hostage, and their extremely vague class policies section on their website leaves a lot of wiggle room in terms of accommodations for life events, even with proper documentation.
Looking back I would have gone for POT or a different studio in LA. It's not just about the class or space, it's also about the environment, the people that work here, and providing a safe space to escape daily life.
Update to add: I requested to retake the classes a different month, even year, as long as I could retake what I paid for. I reached out having only missed two classes, and do not want to take the final class with no knowledge of the previous two. They seem to be very fast at replying to provide an answer on google, but still have no responded to my email from this morning, asking if I could pay to implement the $25 flexibility to my order. It's really sad when small businesses handle customer service like this. Another hidden google review, and some other lower reviews have all reflected issues around customer service itself. That should say enough."

Choosing Your Pottery Class
When selecting a studio, consider factors like location, class size, instructor experience, and the overall vibe. Some studios, like Bitter Root Pottery, boast scenic locations, even offering ocean views, which can enhance the creative experience. Others, like Two Faced Ceramics, are known for their welcoming atmosphere and creative therapeutic benefits, making them ideal for solo outings or girls' days. It's also worth checking if the studio offers community studio memberships for those who want to continue their pottery journey beyond a single class.
Remember to inquire about the firing process and pickup timelines. Most studios require your creations to be fired in a kiln, which can take several weeks. Understanding this policy is crucial, especially if you're a visitor planning your departure. Reading reviews can also provide valuable insights into customer service and the overall quality of instruction, helping you find the perfect pottery studio for your artistic endeavors.
The Pottery Experience: From Clay to Kiln
The journey from raw clay to a finished ceramic piece involves several stages. After your initial creation, the piece needs to dry thoroughly before it can be fired in a kiln. This firing process hardens the clay, making it durable. Many studios offer glazing services, allowing you to add color and decorative finishes to your piece. The final firing after glazing seals the design and gives your pottery its finished look.
It's important to manage expectations regarding the timeline. The entire process, from class to pickup, can take 4-6 weeks. This waiting period adds to the anticipation and makes the final reveal of your unique creation even more special. While some studios might offer shipping, factor this into your plans if you're not local. The satisfaction of holding a piece you made with your own hands is a unique and lasting reward.
