Hiking Nike Hill in South El Monte to visit one of the missile sites during the Cold War was quite the workout! Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Nike Missile Site for its breathtaking panoramic views of Los Angeles, often calling it a hidden gem and a superior alternative to more crowded viewpoints. The historical significance of the Cold War-era site, combined with the enjoyable hike and peaceful atmosphere, makes it a highly recommended destination for a unique outdoor experience.

"I haven't seen since 1980, before LA-96C was open to the public, when I stumbled into it while riding my motorcycle on Dirt Mulholland. I'm glad to revisit with a better appreciation of the measures taken to defend against potential Soviet nuclear bombers."

"I personally thought this view was MUCH better than Griffith Observatory for a few reasons:

1) it’s closer to the ocean so you can see the coast line
2) it’s further away from downtown so there’s a little less smog
3) you have to walk to it so there’s A LOT less people

It took us about 25 minutes to walk up the path to the site. There’s a consistent incline the entire way but it’s nothing to strenuous.

There was plenty of parking at the trail head. We parked our 25 ft school bus without issue.

Once at the site there were about 20 stairs to the lookout point but you don’t have to climb these as the view is just as good from the ground.

There were bathrooms at the top and plenty of signage to read.

There was only about 10 other people on the entire site when we arrived and we were all very spread out.

There are a handful of picnic tables and benches here too! Next time we’re bringing a picnic because it is so beautiful and peaceful!
10/10 would go here again over Griffith."

"The "Nike Missile Control Site LA-96C" was one of 16 Nike missile installations encircling the Los Angeles basin during the Cold War, operational from 1956 to 1968 . Located atop San Vicente Mountain at 17500 Mulholland Drive, the site housed radar arrays, computer systems, and command infrastructure in a distinctive “mushroom”-shaped tower designed to monitor and guide Nike-Ajax and later Nike-Hercules surface-to-air missiles toward potential hostile aircraft . The installation was part of the U.S. Army’s Project Nike, named after the Greek goddess of victory—not the athletic brand—and formed a critical node in the nation’s early air defense strategy . After deactivation in 1968, the site was transferred to the City of Los Angeles and integrated into San Vicente Mountain Park, managed by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy . Unlike many similar sites that were demolished, LA-96C’s control buildings and radar platforms remain largely intact, offering public access to Cold War-era military architecture and panoramic views of both the San Fernando Valley and the Los Angeles Basin . The site is now a protected historic landmark and a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts ."
