What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Los Angeles for its stunning modern architecture, serene atmosphere, and impressive artwork, particularly the crucifix and tapestries. It's seen as a peaceful sanctuary in the heart of downtown LA. Some note that it can feel a bit stark compared to older cathedrals, and parking can be a consideration.
"Great looking Cathedral! Hometown. First visited when it opened, inaugurated back in 2000.
Recently visited on a Pilgrimage of Hope 2025. 9 mile walk with many parishioners from the LA archdiocese. 4-5k people. Amazing experience."
Manuel Rosas (El Profe)
"This cathedral is a relatively new addition to the Downtown Los Angeles landscape - the modern structure is constructed of concrete and was completed in 2002. The structure was designed by Spanish architect Jose Rafael Moneo and was intended to imitate adobe (traditional clay construction) and last 500 years. The massive bronze doors that welcome worshipers and visitors were created by sculptor Robert Graham, who also created the statue of the Virgin Mary with angels watching over her from above. Inside the cathedral, windows provide natural lighting and a glowing crucifix sits high above the altar. In the Crypt Museum, down the stairs, is the city's previous cathedral, built in 1876 and irreparably damaged in the 1994 earthquake. Admission to the cathedral is free."

"Walk the grounds and admire the architecture. You are welcome to tour the cathedral too, the restaurant, and even stop to pray. Just remember to check the schedules if you want to attend a mass."

Architectural Marvels of the Cathedral
One of the most distinctive features is the extensive use of alabaster windows. These translucent panels, backlit by natural light, create a soft, ethereal glow throughout the nave, bathing the space in a warm, inviting ambiance. This innovative use of light is a hallmark of the cathedral's design, setting it apart from older, more dimly lit structures. The bronze doors, weighing several tons each, are another significant artistic element, featuring intricate relief sculptures that tell biblical stories.
Inside, the crucifix is a central focal point, a massive, abstract representation that dominates the sanctuary. The tapestry-lined walls add color and texture, depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The overall effect is one of grandeur and solemnity, yet with a contemporary sensibility that resonates with modern worshippers.
A Place for Peace and Reflection
Whether you are visiting for religious reasons or simply to appreciate its architectural beauty, the cathedral provides numerous spaces for quiet contemplation. The various chapels dedicated to different saints and intentions offer intimate settings for prayer. The main sanctuary, with its soaring ceilings and diffused light, encourages a sense of reverence and introspection.
Many visitors highlight the sense of spiritual uplift they experience during their visit. It's a place where one can pause, breathe, and connect with something larger than oneself. The thoughtful design, from the gentle illumination to the carefully placed artwork, all contributes to an environment conducive to inner peace.
