"From Lompoc, go west on Ocean Ave/246 until you get to the ocean - it feels like a long way the first time you go! The first access is Ocean Park Rd - this leads to an area where you can park and look at the ocean, but beach access is closed for habitat management. If you stay on Ocean Ave past Ocean Park, you will come to a better parking area with the Amtrak station. You will also be able to see the gates for the Vandenberg AFB. Park here and you will have open beach access, unless the Air Force has had to close the beach for a specific reason. This beach is smaller (about 1/2 mile of beach access) but beautiful and well maintained by a knowledgeable Beach Keeper (Dave was the BK during my visit). There is a lovely trail that goes from this beach over to the other beach for good views - however there are fences to restrict access for habitat management."

"I would have said this was the best experience....however I feel it's important to inform future travelers that if your final stop is Lompoc Surf, make sure you have someone you know that is picking you up as there is absolutely no service. I was left stranded and had to ask the only truck I saw for a ride into town."
