The Nebraska State capitol in Lincoln is a must visit. It’s constructed of Indiana limestone, which is literally the best stone to use to construct a building with. It took ten years to build and cost 10 million when it was completed in 1932. Bertram Goodhue was the architect. Hildreth Meiere did the murals on the floor. Lee Lawrie was the relief sculptor. I added Beethoven’s Symphony Number 9, or...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Nebraska State Capitol as one of the most impressive and beautiful capitols they've encountered, highlighting its stunning architecture, intricate art, and the panoramic views from the observation deck. While some note that it's not a bustling tourist hub, its quiet grandeur and historical significance are deeply appreciated.

"One of the coolest capitals I’ve ever been to. I took a walk around the grounds early in the morning. It was right after a thunderstorm the night before, as you can see in one of my picture we got to meet the governor‘s cat. Well, it must be the governor’s cat. It was pretty well fed. It needed a little company because of the thunderstorm hours before and it was a wonderful morning we came back later in the day and walked the steps to top little bit disappointed because I may never returned Lincoln, Nebraska and the observation balcony was closed but really enjoyed looking around the inside of the building tile work was beautiful"

"One of the coolest capitols we have been in. We unfortunately did not get to do the tour, however there is a lot of mosaic art on the floors, walls, and ceiling. There are also statues, and hallways where you can look out into the courtyard. I recommend picking up the templates at the least to learn some of the history and meaning behind the mosaics, but a tour would be best. The tours are free, and they happen just about every hour, however I recommend checking the schedule that is at the front desk. Also, the bathrooms are clean."

"As someone who is intimately familiar with this building I would say there is a lot to see and enjoy. It is not a place to go “party” or really hang out all that much. It is a nice quiet building with a nice little tour. You have the freedom to walk just about anywhere in the building. The main purpose is to conduct Government business firstly and secondly to act as a historical monument of education to the people that the government does business on behalf of. I would say if you’re looking for a massive tourist hub of activity that is not what this place is. But if you are looking for a cool building with lots of artwork and historical facts and history and to learn more about the Nebraska state government you found your place. I would say the most under utilized part of the building is the outside 2nd floor balcony. It’s a beautiful 360 view of the surrounding downtown area. It is obviously not as high up as the 14th floor view but it’s a beautiful open terrace like area to enjoy both the building and outside. The 2nd
Most under utilized section would be the 4 gardens on the interior. Each garden section has a beautiful different colored water fountain, and benches. These are designed to allow a breeze to blow down into them most of the time and standing close to the fountain is usually a cooler temp as the moving water acts like a swamp cooler. The wonderfully black and white checkered pathways add a nostalgic tinge of beauty to walking in the space. These are good places to just sit with your thoughts, be alone, or otherwise find some peace for a bit. The only reason I don’t give this place 5 stars is because it does feel like there are amenities missing in comparison to other state capitols. The information desk on the 1st floor isn’t always staffed and if you don’t come in the main front entrance it isn’t obvious where the tourist office is. And the cafeteria is nothing to write home about. But the newly opened gift shop is wonderful. Also it is a great substitute if you are visiting but the city center tourist office is closed the capitol staff have some great recommendations and advice for visitors."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Architectural Marvel: A Blend of Styles

The Nebraska State Capitol, completed in 1932, is a striking example of Art Deco architecture, but it masterfully incorporates elements of Neo-Byzantine and Gothic Revival styles. Designed by Bertram Goodhue, the building's most distinctive feature is its soaring 400-foot tower, which was intended to serve as a beacon visible from miles away across the flat Nebraska landscape. Unlike traditional capitols with a central dome, this design features a square base with four smaller towers and a central, octagonal tower topped by a golden dome. The exterior is clad in Indiana limestone, chosen for its durability and aesthetic qualities. Instagram+1

The interior is equally impressive, with a rich tapestry of artistic and architectural details. The rotunda is a focal point, leading visitors into the building's core. Throughout the Capitol, you'll find intricate mosaic art on the floors and walls, as well as stunning murals that depict scenes from Nebraska's history, agriculture, and industry. The attention to detail in the stonework, metalwork, and decorative elements creates a truly immersive experience for visitors. Reddit

Visitors often remark on the sheer artistry and craftsmanship evident in every corner of the Capitol. The combination of these diverse architectural influences results in a building that is both monumental and deeply artistic, reflecting the spirit and history of Nebraska. It's a testament to the vision of its architects and the skill of the artisans who brought it to life. Instagram

Exploring the Capitol's Art and Symbolism

The Nebraska State Capitol is not just a seat of government; it's a gallery of art and symbolism. The interior is adorned with numerous murals and mosaics created by artists like Hildreth Meiere and Lee Lawrie, each telling a story about Nebraska's heritage. These artworks often depict themes of agriculture, industry, Native American history, and the pioneers who settled the state. Instagram

One of the most captivating aspects is the floor mosaics, which are not merely decorative but also symbolic. These intricate patterns often represent different aspects of Nebraskan life and governance. Taking a guided tour is highly recommended, as guides can illuminate the meaning behind these artistic choices and provide historical context that might otherwise be missed. Reddit

Beyond the visual arts, the building itself is a symbol of Nebraska's resilience and progress. The towering structure, visible from afar, represents the state's aspirations and its central role in the nation. The courtyards, with their fountains and gardens, offer moments of tranquility and reflection, symbolizing the peace and natural beauty of the state. Reddit

Beyond the Building: The Capitol Grounds

While the interior of the Nebraska State Capitol is a major draw, don't overlook the grounds and exterior spaces. The building is surrounded by well-maintained landscaping, offering a pleasant environment for a stroll. The interior courtyards are particularly noteworthy, providing serene oases within the Capitol complex. These gardens feature beautiful fountains and are designed to allow a gentle breeze, making them cooler spots even on warm days. Reddit

The second-floor balcony is often cited as an underutilized gem, offering a beautiful 360-degree view of the surrounding downtown area. While not as high as the 14th-floor observation deck, it provides a unique perspective of the city and the Capitol's architecture from an open terrace. It's a perfect spot to relax, take photos, or simply enjoy the ambiance. Reddit

Visitors who have explored the grounds often mention the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to appreciate the Capitol from different angles. It's a great way to complement your interior visit and get a fuller appreciation of this architectural masterpiece and its place within Lincoln. Reddit
