Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the volunteer-run nature and the historical charm of the Berkshire Scenic Railway. The friendly staff and the opportunity to ride on vintage trains are highlights. However, some find the 'scenic' views limited and the ride duration shorter than expected, with a lack of onboard facilities.

"Know that the “scenic views” are limited to what you can see along the tracks in downtown. You ride backward for 15 mins then forward for 15 mins. If you’re lucky you sit in a seat that flips to accommodate this straight trip to the end of the line and back again. Nice view of some water ways and ancient cemetery. This is run by volunteers. There’s a little bit of pre scripted information read over an antiquated PA system but most of the time ya just sit and look out the window waiting to get back to the station. Sheldon Cooper would have been disappointed. (I know I was. )
No facilities on the train so get to the station early to stand in line to use the restroom. There’s a small gift shop/museum inside an old train car at the station. Lots of interesting reads about the history of the city and its industry and why the railway was brought to the area."

"We took past the peak no Thu train, which this year was actually at the peak of colors. The views were better than I expected from reading reviews. However you need to sit on the right side of the train when it goes out. We switched sides on the way back and it was less attractive. Yes, there were some delapedated back yards, and tossed away mattresses but not all the time. The train ride is 45 minutes.the staff is friendly and informative if you ask questions, but there was no history lessons. The train was a 1953 commuter train, so not historic or particularly interesting but clean and comfortable. The train was just one car and almost full."

"Good fun, a smooth ride, and friendly, knowledgeable volunteers.
Even on a grey, misty day in late October the Berkshire Scenic has plenty to offer and is worth a trip.
We’ve been to many scenic railways and each has its own charm. The Berkshire is no exception.
It is a smooth ride with great views of the nearby mountains and surrounding towns.
The conductors were very friendly and shared a bit of the story of the railway and the train we were riding.
Ask for the optional trip guide. It includes the backstory and a helpful history of many sites along the way."
