What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Oak Hill Cemetery is widely praised for its rich history, beautiful grounds, and peaceful atmosphere, making it a cherished spot for reflection and exploration. While many appreciate the manicured landscapes and historical significance, some visitors note areas that could benefit from more consistent care, particularly in older sections.
"Such a wonderful cemetery with loads of history. So many famous Lawrencians are here from current times all the way back to Quantrill’s Raid. The grounds are exceptionally manicured and clean. The Veterans perpetual flame memorial is where I spend every Memorial Day to honor the vets in my family. I’ll member forgot the day when I went with my oldest when she was in 5th grade on a field trip to find historical headstones. Also a great place to see a variety of species!"

"A very old, well kept cemetery with many interesting headstones and crypts. There were a couple of headstones that stood out and imprinted themselves in my heart.
It is very large, with many meandering roads, gorgeous trees and plants.
There was no office so no restrooms, go before you arrive. If I lived in the neighborhood, I would walk there often. Peaceful, beautiful and a nice place to visit."

A Living Landscape: The Design and Nature of Oak Hill Cemetery
Visitors often praise the exceptionally manicured grounds, noting the beauty of the trees and plants. However, some reviews also point out that certain areas, particularly older sections, can be less maintained, with flat headstones covered in leaves or grass. This natural element, while sometimes requiring a bit of tidying by visitors, adds to the cemetery's historic charm and provides a rich environment for observing local flora and fauna.
The cemetery's natural beauty is particularly highlighted during autumn, with visitors seeking out the breathtaking fall colors. This makes Oak Hill a prime destination for photographers and artists looking to capture the moody, atmospheric scenes.
Echoes of History: Notable Burials and Historical Significance
Visitors often express a desire to discover historical headstones, with some recalling field trips where they searched for them. The cemetery is home to veterans from the Civil War and Revolutionary War, including General Joseph Tar Copeland. The presence of these historical figures underscores Oak Hill's importance as a historical landmark.
Beyond individual graves, the cemetery itself holds historical context, with its earliest graves dating back to the late eighteen hundreds. The design and evolution of the cemetery reflect changing attitudes towards memorialization and landscape design over time.
Preservation and Community: The Future of Oak Hill
Efforts are being made to address these challenges. The 'Friends of Oak Hill' group is mentioned as a way for the community to get involved in the cemetery's upkeep, offering volunteer opportunities for those looking to contribute. Discussions around landscape and cultural importance, including restoration efforts, are also part of the ongoing narrative surrounding the cemetery.
Some visitors have noted specific preservation techniques, such as a vegetation kill zone around stones to save money, which can lead to erosion issues for some monuments. This highlights the delicate balance between historical preservation, budget realities, and the desire to maintain the cemetery's beauty and integrity for future generations.
