What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Laurel Lake Preserve is praised for its accessible, well-maintained trails and abundant wildlife, making it a great spot for families and nature lovers. However, visitors should be extremely cautious about ticks, and fishing from the shore can be challenging due to overgrowth. Limited lake views and occasional traffic noise are also noted drawbacks.
"Easy to walk, clearly marked well-maintained trails. Right off main road, easy to find, close to town, food, and ice cream. Free parking. 2.2 mile loop good for families. Horse trail also located here. Picnic area."
Phyllis Montgomery
"I came down to check out the possibility of some freshly stocked brown and rainbow trout but sadly came ill prepared. There is an easily accessible launch area for kayaking or smaller bass skiffs but everything that I saw from shore is cluttered w/overgrowth,no angles to get a good cast going. I'll be bringing my waders next time, there's a few spots w/easy sandy bottom to get out past the overhang. For the non-fishing set it's a moderate hike w/well defined main trails and other less so to vear off and explore. I did find a really cool sandpit approx the size of a couple of football fields. There's lots of fresh tracks from big deer, turkeys and fox(they've gotta be loving it cause there's tons of bunnies everywhere). This is a cool place to kill a couple of hrs between a stroll around Greenport and the ride west."

"Plenty of wildlife.
Relatively small parking lot, hardly any other people. There very nice quiet area"

Navigating the Trails and Tick Awareness
A significant concern for visitors is the prevalence of ticks, particularly on the green trail. Many hikers report finding multiple ticks after their visit, even when taking precautions. It is highly recommended to wear long sleeves, long pants, and use insect repellent. Thoroughly check yourself, your children, and pets for ticks after your hike.
While the trails offer a pleasant walk through the woods, some visitors note that direct views of the lake can be limited, especially during certain seasons. Additionally, traffic noise from nearby roads can be audible along parts of the trail. For those seeking a more immersive lake experience, consider the accessible launch area for kayaking or smaller boats.
Fishing Opportunities and Challenges
For the best fishing experience, visitors are advised to bring waders. This allows you to get into the water past the overhangs and into areas with easier sandy bottoms, providing better casting opportunities. Alternatively, the preserve offers an easily accessible launch area for kayaks or smaller bass skiffs, which can provide better access to fishing spots on the lake.
Even if fishing isn't your primary goal, the lake's environment supports a variety of wildlife, including deer, turkeys, foxes, and numerous bunnies, making it an interesting place for nature observation.
