What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
LaTourette Park and Golf Course offers a beautiful parkland setting with a historic charm, praised for its scenic views and improved fairways. However, inconsistent conditions in greens and bunkers, along with variable pace of play due to course policies, are common drawbacks mentioned by visitors.
"Super impressed with the layout and condition of the course. A beautiful rolling parkland course with superb views on many holes. Not too long from the whites, the greens were true and firm. Had the pleasure of playing a few holes with John and Pete from the grounds crew, they keep the fairway and rough in top shape and are passionate about what they do. Decent golfers too!"

"Major improvements were made to this golf course. Grass was clean cut, sand pits were refurbished recently and the putting greens were well maintained. Typical for a few minor brown spots, that's just nature. Overall I was very impressed. I can tell that a lot of work was done to make it a more enjoyable experience. Compared to when I last visited two years ago. I advise to bring a golf balls as you may loose a few of them on the holes where you need to hit over the creek, Adds to the fun! Very historic of a golf course too, I appreciated reading the plaques telling us the story of the golf course and seeing the photos inside the club house."

"Be forewarned you’re playing here because you want a convenient place to play golf on short notice. All the negative stuff you read here is true, but I still had fun with a friend, early in the season.
See all the pictures. Played on a sunny Tuesday and it rained 3.5 days ago. The place is rundown, the parking lot is for SUVs, they are charging $3.50 for a bottle of water and the grill isn’t open yet.
Fairways are in good shape, they recently punched the greens so they are slow, bumpy and sandy. Bunkers are totally unplayable because of water or no sand, so keep the balls down the middle. Otherwise, enjoy yourself!"

For families with aspiring golfers, the course's less intimidating layout from the white tees can be a good starting point for beginners. Navigating the Course: Layout and Challenges
One of the key features that adds to the challenge are the water hazards, particularly creeks that come into play on certain holes. These necessitate careful consideration of club selection and trajectory, as losing a ball is a distinct possibility. While the course has seen significant improvements, including refurbished sand traps and well-maintained greens, players should be aware that conditions can fluctuate. Some reviews mention greens being slow and bumpy after aeration, and bunkers being unplayable at times due to water or lack of sand.
Despite these potential inconsistencies, the overall layout is praised for its beauty and playability. The blend of scenic views and strategic challenges makes LaTourette a unique golfing experience on Staten Island. It's a course where enjoying the natural surroundings is as much a part of the game as the score itself.
The Historic Significance of LaTourette
The parkland setting also contributes to its historical ambiance. The mature trees and rolling terrain suggest a landscape that has been cherished for generations. This sense of history is palpable as you walk the fairways, imagining the countless rounds played before. It’s a reminder that LaTourette is more than just a golf course; it’s a piece of local heritage.
Visitors who appreciate the historical context often find their experience at LaTourette more rewarding. It’s an opportunity to connect with the past while enjoying the present-day amenities and natural beauty of the park.
Understanding Pace of Play and Policies
However, a recurring point of contention involves specific course policies that can lead to delays. One notable example cited is the practice of allowing multiple 9-hole bookings to tee off from the back nine at frequent intervals, even during peak hours. This can create significant backups and frustration for players expecting a continuous round. This policy, while perhaps intended to maximize tee time utilization, can negatively impact the overall player experience for those seeking a more fluid game.
It's crucial for potential visitors to be aware of these potential scheduling quirks. While the course itself offers a beautiful setting and enjoyable golf, understanding and managing expectations regarding the pace of play is key to a positive visit. Communicating with the pro shop about expected wait times and course flow can be beneficial.
