Nestled in the foothills of the Oregon mountains in Las Cruces, New Mexico is this La Cueva (the cave) trail. Apaches used the cave as refuge in the 18th and 19th centuries. Later, Giovanni Maria Agustini (The Hermit) moved in and lived out the last of his life here. Have you done this hike? #lascruces #newmexico #hermit #lacueva

Sierra Vista Trail Runs 2025. 5k, 10k, Half and 50k. Such a fun time seeing all the friendly faces. I chose the half marathon distance. It was a tough course 1200 ft of elevation gain/loss. What goes down must come up. I’m always so grateful to be able to participate and finish uninjured. That’s always a win in my book! Thank you @southernnewmexicotrailalliance for a well marked course loaded aid ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Sierra Vista Trail for its stunning Organ Mountains views and free dispersed camping opportunities. However, the trail's rugged, rocky terrain and limited facilities are noted drawbacks. Some campers have also encountered issues with private property boundaries near the camping areas. Reddit+2

"Great place for dispersed camping. Not too many spots, but it wasn’t crowded enough for that to be a problem when I stayed here (end of April 2025). You can get a beautiful view of the sky with the sparkling lights of the city"

Sophia Jones

"This is a strenuous 29 mile trail through beautiful country. There is free disbursed camping at the north trailhead near Las Cruces off Dripping Springs Rd. We stayed several nights and explored the area, enjoying the gorgeous Organ Mountains outside our front door. There are no facilities but drinking water is available at spigots in the nearby Dripping Springs fee area. There is as always a 14 day stay limit on BLM land. Please take care of our natural heritage and land use privilege by being quiet, thoughtful of other campers, minimizing outdoor lighting and leaving no trace!"

Amanda Mueller

"Nice free camp spot. Only a few pull off spots on the graded road, which is less than a 1/4 mile long. A few campers in the turn around at the end. Place fills up quick. There is also a pocket for camping over the hill next to the turn around. If you have a 4x4 with decent clearance, there are many more sites beyond the official campground. No garbage collection, water or bathrooms here."

Dispersed Camping at Sierra Vista Trail

Sierra Vista Trail offers a popular spot for free dispersed camping on BLM land, providing a rustic experience with stunning views of the Organ Mountains and the distant city lights. Campers can expect a limited number of pull-off spots along a graded road, with additional sites available for those with higher clearance vehicles. It's crucial to remember that this is dry camping, meaning no water, restrooms, or garbage collection are provided. Visitors are expected to practice Leave No Trace principles, packing out all trash and minimizing their impact on the environment. The 14-day stay limit is strictly enforced. Reddit+2

While the main camping area is accessible for most vehicles, the road becomes significantly rougher beyond the initial trail entrance. This makes it unsuitable for trailers or RVs without significant off-road capability. Many campers appreciate the quiet solitude, but spots fill up quickly, especially from Thursday through Sunday, so arriving early is highly recommended. The proximity to Las Cruces, about 15 minutes away, makes it convenient for stocking up on supplies. Reddit

Be aware that some private housing exists within the BLM land, and interactions with these residents can sometimes be challenging. Travelers have reported encountering hostility if they accidentally stray onto private property. Despite these potential issues, the allure of free camping with such spectacular scenery makes Sierra Vista Trail a sought-after destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Reddit
