What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Lake Powell's breathtaking, otherworldly natural beauty, with many describing it as feeling like another planet. The opportunities for outdoor recreation, from water sports to hiking and exploring canyons, are a major highlight. However, some note the impact of fluctuating water levels and the potential for crowds during peak season.
"Welcome to the one of Mother Nature's most beautiful and stunning National Park with a variety of different activities to explore. From Lake Powell to Glen Canyon Dam, this is where the mighty Colorado River meets towering sandstone walls, creating a natural wonder that'll leave you awestruck. This amazing area is a haven for outdoor lovers, with endless opportunities for hiking, camping, swimming, and kayaking. We had so much fun exploring the area, from simple hikes along the rim and base of the Colorado River, to kayaking up Antelope Canyon and discovering hidden coves, ancient petroglyphs, and breathtaking vistas you will never be bored with things to do or see. However, this is a fee-based area unless you have one of the National Park cards, which is free to all military personnel, retirees and veterans."

"If you’re driving up north on the 89 you must stop!!! It’s a short hike and you see some really cool stuff. Or you can do a long hike and make a day of it and there’s some cool stuff even further.
We hiked to the hoodo mushrooms and they were pretty awesome probably 15 minute hike. I think it’s like a mile total.
Definitely worth a stop to stretch your legs if you’re doing a long road trip up north"

Houseboating on Lake Powell
When planning your houseboat trip, consider the water levels, as they can affect access to certain areas and marinas. Many visitors recommend bringing all your groceries and supplies, as options at marinas can be limited and costly. Familiarize yourself with boating regulations and safety procedures before setting sail. The experience offers a unique perspective on the canyons and a chance to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature.
Exploring the Slot Canyons
Popular canyons include Antelope Canyon (though access is often managed separately and requires tours), but many other accessible slot canyons can be explored directly from the lake. Visitors often describe the experience as feeling like they're on another planet. Remember to check water levels, as some canyons may become inaccessible or more challenging to navigate during periods of low water. Bringing a waterproof camera or phone case is highly recommended to capture the unique beauty of these natural wonders.
Water Sports and Recreation
Tubing is a particularly popular family activity, often leading to hilarious moments and memorable wipeouts. For those seeking a more advanced water sport, foil boarding offers a unique sensation of gliding above the water. Regardless of your chosen activity, always prioritize safety: wear life jackets, be aware of boat traffic, and stay hydrated under the strong desert sun.
