What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Eleven Mile State Park's beautiful reservoir, excellent fishing opportunities, and stunning panoramic views, especially from higher campsites. The abundant wildlife, particularly bird nesting in June, and incredible stargazing are frequently highlighted as major draws. Some note the rough roads and the need to bring ample supplies.
"First camping trip here and it was amazing. From the hiking trails to the great front office staff at the check-in station everyone was great. Getting to your campsite was easy, they give you a map at check-in, explain where things are then you're off on your own for the length of your stay. Bring lots of water and firewood!"

"We didn't really experience the lake, just the campground, which was wonderful!
There is a long gravel road to get to the lake, but there is a little general store if you need anything. In addition, there is a Visitør Center , with flush toilets, and a marina shop as well. Both of these places were closed when we went to visit, so I can't really say what they all have to offer. It did look like there were boat rentals available.
The campground had numerous loops ( I think about 10!) with about 325 campsites. I have to admit, some were very close with little screening, but with a little searching, good ones could be found. We were in the Rocky Ridge Loop, which was higher up with great views of the lake, distant mountains and the surrounding landscape. There were even some trails leaving up to still higher hills which were a great place to really take in the view and get some exercise in the process.
Other than ravens, not much for wildlife. There were some nice forbs along the ridgelines and away from the campsites.
The price, at $28, was definitely reasonable. It was a nice quiet night of camping with great views. Can't ask for much more than that."

"This is an amazing “birding” place in June. Pelicans, cormorants, herons and seagulls all come to a rock island to lay their eggs. You can paddle board or kayak around the island. The road is pretty rough, slow drive. Eleven mile canyon is a nice side trip if you can handle the road. The stars are unbelievable."

Camping at Eleven Mile State Park
When selecting a campsite, consider your priorities. If you seek panoramic views, look for sites higher up in loops like Rocky Ridge. If proximity to the water is key, explore loops closer to the reservoir's edge. Some campers have noted that certain loops have sites that are quite close together, so a little research or a quick drive-through before choosing can be beneficial. Remember to bring plenty of water and firewood, as these are not always readily available on-site.
Beyond the individual campsites, the park offers a generally quiet camping experience, punctuated by the sounds of nature. The open terrain means you'll likely see plenty of stars at night, and the vastness of the park provides a sense of solitude even when campgrounds are busy. The reasonable camping fees make it an attractive option for those looking for a scenic and affordable getaway.
Fishing and Angling Adventures
Successfully fishing here often requires understanding the local hatches. A mayfly hatch in the morning and evening can be a prime time for activity, with insects like tricos and PMDs being important to match. During the midday, zebra midges have proven effective. Even a simple parachute Adams can sometimes be the ticket when trying to match the hatch. Experimentation with different lures and flies is key to success.
Beyond the main reservoir, Eleven Mile Canyon offers a different, yet equally rewarding, fishing experience. The canyon's environment provides a scenic backdrop for fly fishing and is known for its trout populations. Accessing the canyon involves navigating a rougher gravel road, but the fishing opportunities make it a worthwhile side trip for dedicated anglers. Remember to always check and adhere to current Colorado fishing regulations, including size and bag limits.
Exploring the Natural Beauty
One of the park's most remarkable natural spectacles occurs in June when a rock island in the reservoir becomes a bustling bird rookery. Pelicans, cormorants, herons, and seagulls gather here to nest, creating an incredible opportunity for birdwatching. Visitors can observe this phenomenon from a distance or by paddling around the island in kayaks or paddleboards.
The park's remoteness also contributes to its natural appeal, particularly after dark. The unbelievable stargazing opportunities are a major draw for many visitors. With minimal light pollution, the night sky comes alive with a brilliant display of stars, planets, and the Milky Way, offering a truly awe-inspiring experience.
