Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the unique geological formations of the 'Dragon's Teeth' and the 'Labyrinth,' describing them as visually stunning and unlike anything they've seen. The dramatic coastal views and the chance to spot sea turtles are also highlights. However, some find the parking fees steep and navigating the rocky, sharp terrain requires caution.

"This hike was totally worth it! The path is a bit rocky and can be tricky to find, but we ended up taking a shortcut through the golf course to avoid the rocks. The labyrinth itself was really cool and took about 5 minutes to complete. The waves by the rocks were pretty intense, but they were also really fun to watch. Parking is a freebie for Maui locals, but tourists will have to pay $30."

"Really cool place to walk around and explore. Dragons teeth look even better in person. Watching the sunset from here is good idea too. A place you can spend 30 minutes or explore around for a lot longer. So many interesting things here including crazy tide pools."

Carlos Archuleta

"I was looking for free things to do in Maui. For new travelers to the island I can say that is easier said then done. But I found dragons teeth and decided to venture there. Don’t be alarmed when you put Dragons Teeth in Apple Maps and it takes you to the Honolua Store at a resort. You’re on the right path. Drive past the store until the end of the road and there is parking. Be aware that it costs a whopping $33 if you have pay to park. Once to park you will see a path (stay on the path! Outside the path is a cultural and sacred site with access granted to the Hawaiian people so please be respectful) it’s a winding dirt path that transforms to a rocky path and then you see the teeth. You can stand on the edge and catch glimpses of sea turtles. You can hike along the edges and get a view of more northern part of the island. Don’t skip this scenic view"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Geology of the Dragon's Teeth

The striking 'Dragon's Teeth' formations at Makaluapuna Point are a testament to Maui's volcanic past. They were created by one of the island's last lava flows that poured into the ocean. The unique chemical composition of this lava allowed the powerful ocean waves to interact with it in a peculiar way. Instead of simply eroding the flow, the waves pushed back the molten rock, causing it to solidify into the sharp, vertical, fin-like structures that give the point its name. Instagram+1

This geological process has resulted in a landscape that many describe as otherworldly. The jagged, dark lava rock contrasts dramatically with the blue ocean and sky, creating a visually stunning and unique environment. It's a powerful reminder of the immense forces that shaped the Hawaiian Islands over millennia. Instagram

Exploring this area offers a chance to witness these ancient volcanic forces firsthand. The formations are not only visually impressive but also tell a story of the dynamic interaction between fire and water on Maui. Instagram

Respecting Sacred Sites

Makaluapuna Point, including the 'Dragon's Teeth' area, holds cultural significance for the Hawaiian people. It's crucial for visitors to be mindful and respectful of this heritage. The advice to 'stay on the path' is paramount, as areas off the marked trails may be considered cultural or sacred sites with access granted specifically to the Hawaiian community. Reddit

By adhering to designated pathways, visitors help preserve the integrity of these sensitive areas. This practice ensures that the natural beauty and cultural importance of Makaluapuna Point can be maintained for future generations. It's a small but significant way to show aloha and respect for the land and its history. Reddit

When visiting, remember that you are a guest. Observing local customs and respecting the environment are key components of responsible tourism. This includes not disturbing any natural elements and leaving the area as you found it. TikTok

Whale Watching Opportunities

During the winter months, Makaluapuna Point offers a fantastic vantage point for whale watching. Humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of Maui to breed and calve, and their presence can often be seen from the coastline. TikTok

While not guaranteed, keeping an eye on the ocean horizon during your visit between December and May can reward you with sightings of these magnificent creatures. Breaching whales, tail slapping, and spouting are common behaviors that can be observed from the shore. TikTok

Even if whales aren't visible, the dramatic coastal scenery and the chance to spot other marine life, like sea turtles, make a visit worthwhile. The rugged cliffs provide a stable and safe platform for observing the ocean's activity. Reddit
