What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Players generally praise the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course for its beautiful desert scenery, challenging Jack Nicklaus design, and excellent course conditions. The iconic holes and strategic layout make for a memorable round. However, some visitors have noted issues with unraked bunkers and the inconvenience of 'cart path only' rules, which can extend playing time.
"4 days a go, Lost one approach bag containing 5 clubs during cart-only transit between Hole 11–12 at PGA West.
The round was enjoyable—the course was beautiful and golfing here was a pleasure.
Bag included XXIO clubs and a Scotty Cameron putter.
Disappearance was noticed within minutes; still hopeful the clubs will be returned via proper return desk protocol.
For future players, clearer club-return signage and streamlined lost-item handling on cart-only routes could protect the experience we enjoy here for."

"Upon arriving early morning on 4/24/25, 6:20 AM, I was greeted by the staff and he grabbed my bag to bring around back, very friendly. When I went to pay for the round, the lady, who looked like she may have been doing inventory, seemed bothered that I was there and was ready to pay.
Driving range and warmup green were great. I played as a single on the course and was forced to ride with a random from the 3some I was paired with. Not really a fan of this as there are plenty of carts at the cart barn just sitting there.
The course was overall decent but the bunkers were terrible. Having the 7:12 am tee time, I expected them to be raked and untouched. There were plenty that weren’t raked and a lot of them that were wet. Some even had areas where a pool of water was still present at the low spot (this was the case on the island green on the par 5 back bunker).
Having been the passenger to the random person on the cart, they wanted to wait at the 18th green for their friends behind us. Not having my own cart, I had to pack my items there and walk. Not the best experience paying for a certain expectation of being able to utilize a cart."

"What a course this is, super nice driving range and execellent course conditions, I love the layout which hosted the american express here, i played from the front tees because im a junior and shot 71, because the greens were tough i couldnt go low here. Would come back but I live in the north. Palm springs is very magical"

The Nicklaus Design Philosophy
The course layout often incorporates risk-reward scenarios, encouraging aggressive play for those willing to take on the challenge. This design philosophy ensures that the course remains engaging and memorable, offering a true test of a golfer's all-around game. The shared greens on holes 9 and 18 are a prime example of his innovative and sometimes playful design approach.
Players often remark on the clever use of the desert landscape, with the course seamlessly integrated into the natural surroundings. This creates a visually stunning experience, where the stark beauty of the desert meets the meticulously manicured fairways and greens. Understanding Nicklaus's approach can significantly enhance your appreciation and strategy on the course.
Navigating the Course: Tips from the Pros
Pay close attention to the wind, especially in the late afternoons, as it can significantly affect club selection and shot trajectory on longer holes. The island green on hole 13 is a prime example of a hole where confidence and precise club selection are paramount. Don't let the visual intimidation get the best of you; trust your yardage and commit to your swing.
For those playing from the blue tees, be aware that holes like #9 and #18 are long par 4s that can be particularly challenging, especially when playing into the evening wind. Ultimately, the Nicklaus Tournament Course rewards thoughtful play and a solid understanding of your own game.
Course Conditions and Maintenance
However, like many courses, conditions can fluctuate. Some recent reviews have pointed out that bunkers may not always be raked and can sometimes be wet, particularly after rain or heavy dew. This is something to be aware of, though it doesn't typically detract significantly from the overall high quality of the course.
The commitment to maintaining the course is evident, making it a premier destination for golfers. The driving range and warmup green are also noted as being in great shape, providing a solid foundation for your round.
