What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Spouting Horn Poipu Kauai to be an easily accessible and impressive natural wonder, with the powerful water spout being the main highlight. Many appreciate the stunning ocean views and the chance to see rainbows. However, some note that the viewing area can feel crowded, especially when tour buses are present, and shade is limited.
"Very nice accessible park located near the Poipu area of Kauai. The main attraction is the Spouting Horn which is a blowhole with a big jet of water that looks much like a geyser. Thhe blowhole is very easy to drive to and observe, unlike the one on Maui. If you are near the park you should plan on a visit. There are picnic tables and real flush toilets in the park. Enjoy the visit."

"The spout was unique and what brought us, but the other sights were also very enjoyable. The variation in blue colors across the water was awesome, I would recommend some good polarized sunglasses and a low cloud cover. I could hangout there for hours and watch the waves crash along the rocky shore. We also saw a sea turtle down in the cove of the spout. The only downfall is that here isn't a lot of space where everithing can be seen, so we felt like we had limited time in the viewing area."

"Really a great place to visit before sunset at the wall. Met some kittens and the usual chickens. A nice place to end my time on Kauai before returning home."

Understanding the Spouting Horn Phenomenon
Adding to the unique experience, a second, smaller hole nearby emits wind, creating a deep, moaning sound as the air is pushed through it. This distinctive sound is part of what makes the Spouting Horn so memorable. The intensity of the spout can vary significantly depending on the size and force of the incoming waves, making each visit potentially different.
While the blowhole is the main draw, the surrounding coastline offers beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean. The vibrant blue colors of the water and the powerful waves crashing against the rocky shore provide a stunning natural display.
Visiting Spouting Horn with Families
While there's no swimming directly at the blowhole due to the rough waves and rocky shore, the park offers picnic tables, making it a great spot for a family lunch. It's important to remind children not to approach the edge of the viewing area too closely and to be aware of the numerous chickens that roam the park. Visiting during less crowded times, like early mornings, can enhance the experience for younger children.
Consider bringing snacks and drinks, as amenities are limited. The natural wonder of the spout, combined with the coastal scenery, provides an engaging and memorable experience for visitors of all ages.
Photography Tips for Spouting Horn
For the best light and fewer crowds, aim for early morning or late afternoon visits. The golden hour before sunset can cast a beautiful glow on the coastline. Don't forget a polarizing filter for your lens; it will significantly enhance the rich blues of the ocean and help cut down on glare from the water and rocks.
Look for opportunities to capture rainbows, which can appear when the mist from the spout catches the sunlight. Also, keep an eye out for marine life; sea turtles have been spotted in the cove near the blowhole. While you can't get too close to the blowhole for safety, the designated viewing platform offers excellent perspectives for both wide-angle shots of the coast and tighter shots of the erupting water.
