What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Koloa Jodo Mission as a serene and historically significant 'hidden gem' offering a peaceful escape with its beautiful Japanese garden and unique temple architecture. Many appreciate the opportunity to experience Buddhist culture and the warm hospitality of the resident minister.
"I've seen a ton of these on Maui, but this was among the best I've seen on the islands. What a hidden gem. There are actually two structures linked by a footbridge, and one of them is basically a moseleum with urns, that you can see through the window. It's located across from a shopping plaza, but it feels so remote and exotic. As much as I love non-touristy places, it's kind of sad this treasure doesn't get more traffic as people are really missing out on a fascinating piece of Hawaiian history and cultural heritage. If you're interested in Buddhist culture, architecture or Hawiian history, you absolutely should not miss this place."

"If you have ever been curious about Japanese Buddhism, I highly recommend a visit to the Koloa Jodo Mission. Rev. Kosen Ishikawa is one of the island's treasures. Rev. Ishikawa told me his job is to "help people to be happy." If you want to attend a Sunday service, look on the Koloa Jodo Mission website for the current schedule. Rev. Ishikawa is a great sushi chef and his cakes are not to be missed."

"This is the last Buddhist temple in Koloa. There were two but no more. Every summer there is a Bon Dance here as there is for all buddhist temples on Kauai. Check the schedule for times and places."
