Insider Tips

We took the kids to Caples Lake last week (just past Kirkwood) and as I was trying to record the water every time I touched my phone to a rock this would happen. There was also a weird sound almost like some kind of static or radio frequency. What do ya’ll think? I just thought it was weird but after what happened in Tahoe shortly thereafter I’m wondering if something was causing the disturbance...

These are two separate videos I took at the same spot as the first video pinned. This was at Caples Lake in the Sierras a little southwest of Tahoe. I was trying to rest my phone on two different rocks to see if I could get it to stop shaking. That and the static I kept hearing only stopped when I lifted my phone off the rocks. I’ve lived up here in 10+ years & film the water at this and many lak...

Caples Lake at sunset here. It is a reservoir that is located near Kirkwood, California along California State Route 88. . The lake was used as a halting place for wagon travelers who were trekking the historic Mormon Trail during the California Gold Rush.

Reviews Summary

Caples Lake is celebrated for its breathtaking alpine beauty, offering a peaceful escape with opportunities for fishing and hiking. Visitors rave about the stunning deep blue waters and serene atmosphere, though some note that trails can be less maintained and dining options are scarce, making it essential to pack accordingly.

"Whether blinding white, covered in ice during winter, or deep blue in summer, at 7,800' altitude, this alpine lake, with its forest-lined shores, is picture-puzzle perfect. Whether it's snowing, or the waves are lapping against the shores, it's quiet and peaceful. One tributary (Woods Creek), on the east side of the lake, is accessible via a seldom-used trail (Woods Creek Trailhead), just off the road, to the right, at the east end of the lake. There is a well-shaded parking area with a single vault toilet. The trail begins next to the toilet. Due to lack of use and maintenance, it quickly becomes obscured and is not always obvious. If you get lost, simply remember that following the shore of the lake will eventually bring you back to the main road. The second tributary (Emigrant Creek), is located on the southeast side of the lake. It is accessible via the Emigrant Lake Trail. The rock formations across the road, on the north shore of the lake, are easy to climb and offer a view from a couple hundred feet above the lake, as well as a valley beyond, and a section of the Pacific Crest Trail to the northeast. There is a small campground as well as a place you can rent boats. If you're going here, do yourself the favor of leaving some time to enjoy it's serenity and features. You will be glad you did. It gets cool at night, even in summer, and cold in winter, so plan accordingly."
