"GORGEOUS! A must-do for sure when in this area on Maui! We stopped here to get that classic Hawaiian palm tree photo with the ocean in the background! Beautiful views, can have big crashing waves at times, but okay for wading in the little area on the right side during less-windy/wavy conditions."

"Google has this cove in the wrong location. Pa'ako Cove (aka "Moonsurfaces") is south on Makena Road. Sorry folks, but this is Makena Cove Beach (aka Secret Cove Beach). Google is wrong again and doesn't give us a way to suggest a correction. This is a photo of Paako Cove just down the street. It doesn't have much sand."

The Allure of Pa'ako Cove: More Than Just a Beach
The cove's beauty is amplified by its potential for incredible marine life encounters. The clear, relatively calm waters (depending on conditions) make it a decent spot for snorkeling, where visitors can observe a variety of tropical fish and even sea turtles. The tide pools that form along the rocky edges are miniature ecosystems, teeming with small creatures like damsels, gobys, and crabs, offering a fascinating glimpse into marine biodiversity for those who look closely.
While Pa'ako Cove is undeniably stunning, it's important to note its limitations. The waves can be powerful, making it more suitable for wading and enjoying the scenery rather than extended swimming. Furthermore, the trail leading down to the cove is uneven, requiring sturdy footwear. Despite these considerations, the serene atmosphere and breathtaking natural beauty make Pa'ako Cove a highly rewarding destination for those who seek out its hidden charm.
Navigating to Pa'ako Cove: A Local's Perspective
Once you've located the general area, parking is typically along the side of Makena Road. It's important to be observant of any signage and to park safely and legally. This short trek through natural vegetation only enhances the feeling of discovering a hidden gem, a sentiment echoed by many visitors who appreciate the effort required to reach this secluded spot.
For those relying on public transport, reaching Pa'ako Cove directly can be challenging. While Kihei is accessible by bus, the final leg to such a secluded spot might require a taxi or ride-sharing service.
