What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently rave about the Na Pali Coast boat tours, calling them an 'epic' and 'unforgettable' highlight of their Kauai trip. The stunning scenery, abundant marine life like dolphins and turtles, and the thrill of exploring sea caves are major draws. Many praise the knowledgeable and friendly crews who go above and beyond to ensure a fantastic experience. Some minor drawbacks include the potential for seasickness and the cost, but overall, the consensus is that it's well worth the investment.
"I've been visiting Kauai for 20+ years and tried many boat touring companies. While many are good, Na Pali Experience has exceeded them all for me. This was the first time I did a private boat tour (6 people on small boat) and it was superior to group catamarans in a few significant ways:
- In large/shared boats, there's no customization with the routes you take or the stops you make. Jackson was able to tailor our trip to what we wanted to do and accommodate everyone's interests.
- If you're prone to motion sickness (like me) you don't feel it at all on a small boat, this was the first time I was able to enjoy the trip start to finish because the boat doesn't oscillate like a catamaran.
- The small boat let's you get closer to the water and other sight seeing; the agility helps maneuver by and into caves with weather permitting, making for a much cooler and immersive experience.
I would recommend Na Pali Experience every single time and I hope they keep the small boat tours as it's one of the best experiences the island has to offer. Thank you Captain Jackson for the BEST time!"

"One of the absolute highlights of my trip to Kauaʻi! I can’t recommend this experience highly enough. The crew truly goes above and beyond to make sure you have the best time possible — from spotting dolphins and snorkeling with turtles to getting splashed by a waterfall and exploring the incredible beauty of the Nā Pali Coast (weather permitting, of course).
I also appreciated that this tour reaches the snorkeling spots early, so we had the place to ourselves before other boats arrived — definitely worth booking one of the earlier departures if you want that experience or better chances of seeing dolphins. The crew even helped us find the perfect angles for photos!
A huge shoutout to Jay and Kiley for making the day unforgettable and the entire trip effortless for everyone on board."

"Absolutely wonderful experience. Worth every cent and more. Our guides were Casey and Chellen, they were fun and very professional, you could tell they were comfortable being on the boat and in the open ocean. PREPARE TO GET WET. we sailed near the coast, we went into any caves we could fit inside and had experiences that you can only experience through this tour. We went under waterfalls and saw Hawaiian spinning dolphins in the 12pm tour. Amazing experience."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
Na Pali Coast boat tours depart from various harbors on Kauai, most commonly from Port Allen. You'll need to arrange your own transportation to the departure point. Some tours may offer shuttle services from major hotels.
While helicopter tours offer a bird's-eye view, boat tours provide a more immersive experience, allowing you to get up close to the cliffs, sea caves, and marine life.
Yes, you can choose from large catamaran tours, smaller raft tours, and even private charters. Raft tours are more adventurous and get you closer to the water, while catamarans offer more stability and amenities.
Wear comfortable, quick-drying clothing and swimwear. Bring a light jacket or windbreaker as it can get breezy. Don't forget reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
Access to the Na Pali Coast is primarily by boat or helicopter. Hiking is possible via the Kalalau Trail, but it requires permits and is very strenuous.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Prices vary significantly based on the tour type, duration, and operator. Expect to pay anywhere from $150 to $300+ per person for group tours, with private charters being considerably more.
It's highly recommended to book your tickets several months in advance, especially for popular operators and during peak seasons, as tours often sell out.
Most tours include the boat ride, narration about the coast's history and legends, snorkeling gear, and often light snacks or a meal. Some may also include drinks.
Some tours, particularly raft tours, have age restrictions (e.g., no children under a certain age) and may not be suitable for individuals with certain health conditions like back problems or pregnancy. Always check with the tour operator.
Tour operators will typically cancel or reschedule tours due to unsafe weather conditions. You'll usually receive a refund or the option to rebook for another day.
🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
You'll see dramatic sea cliffs, lush valleys, sea caves, waterfalls, and potentially dolphins, sea turtles, and whales (seasonally).
Yes, most tours stop at designated spots for snorkeling. Some may also offer opportunities to swim, depending on conditions and the tour operator.
Tours can range from a few hours (half-day) to a full day, depending on the itinerary and type of boat.
It's possible, especially on rougher seas or with larger boats. Taking preventative medication and choosing a smaller boat can help mitigate seasickness.
Larger catamarans usually have restrooms. Smaller raft tours may not, so plan accordingly.
📸 📸 Photography
Early morning and late afternoon offer softer light and dramatic shadows. The 'golden hour' before sunset is particularly stunning.
Be prepared for movement and spray. Use a wide-angle lens for the expansive cliffs and a telephoto lens for wildlife. Consider a waterproof camera or protective casing.
Generally, there are no specific photography restrictions, but always be mindful of other passengers and the crew's instructions.
Drone usage is highly restricted in Hawaii, especially over natural areas and private property. It's best to assume drones are not permitted on boat tours.
A versatile camera with interchangeable lenses is ideal. A GoPro or other action camera is great for capturing the spray and adventure. Ensure you have plenty of battery and storage.
For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Look for tours that emphasize wildlife sightings like dolphins and turtles, as these are often highlights for younger travelers. While raft tours are more adventurous, they might be too intense for very young children or those who are easily frightened. Always check the tour operator's age restrictions and consider your children's temperament before booking.
💰 Budget Travelers
Consider tours that offer shorter durations or focus more on sightseeing rather than extensive snorkeling or dining. While it might mean fewer amenities, you'll still get to witness the breathtaking scenery. Researching different tour operators and comparing prices is key to finding a budget-friendly option.
❤️ Couples & Honeymooners
Many tours offer opportunities for couples to enjoy the stunning views, spot marine life together, and create lasting memories. Some operators even offer special packages or can help arrange a more personalized experience.

Choosing Your Na Pali Coast Boat Tour
Catamaran tours provide a more stable and comfortable ride, ideal for families or those seeking a relaxed sightseeing experience. They often have more amenities, including restrooms and food service, and offer excellent vantage points for photography and wildlife spotting. While they may not access the smallest caves, they still provide stunning views of the majestic cliffs.
For a truly personalized adventure, consider a private boat tour. This allows you to customize your itinerary, spend more time at your favorite spots, and enjoy a more intimate experience with your group. It's often the best option for those with specific interests or who want to avoid crowds entirely.
Wildlife Encounters on the Na Pali Coast
Sea turtles are also a regular feature, gracefully gliding through the water. Many tours make an effort to find these gentle creatures, and some even offer snorkeling opportunities where you can observe them up close.
During the winter months (roughly December to May), humpback whales migrate to Hawaiian waters to breed and calve. Na Pali Coast boat tours can offer incredible whale-watching opportunities during this season, providing a chance to witness these magnificent marine mammals.
The Magic of Na Pali's Sea Caves and Waterfalls
Complementing the caves are the waterfalls that cascade directly into the ocean or down the sheer cliff faces. These ephemeral beauties are a testament to Kauai's lush interior and the dramatic landscape of the Na Pali Coast. Seeing them from the water, especially after rainfall, is a truly magical sight.
Weather permitting is a crucial phrase when discussing sea cave and waterfall access. The ocean conditions can change rapidly, and tour operators prioritize safety, so not all tours may be able to access every cave or get close to every waterfall. However, the sheer spectacle of the coastline itself is always worth the journey.
