What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Donkey Beach Paliku is praised for its stunning, secluded crescent sands and the magical 'tree tunnel' access path. Visitors love the peaceful atmosphere and dramatic ocean views, though many note the powerful waves make swimming unsafe. The trail's uneven terrain and limited shade are minor drawbacks for some.
"The path to the beach is a mini tree tunnel! Harsh waves not fit for children, but beautiful to view as an adult. Sand was fantastic, soft and clean. Not busy for us on a Thursday afternoon. The walkway to the beach was awesome!! See pictures to understand. Easily became a favorite beach of mine that I will recommend. No donkeys for us 😉"

"Donkey Beach is one of the more difficult beaches to access. Because of that, it is also one of the more secluded beaches. We spent a good four hours here on a beautiful Sunday and saw only two other people. Shade is extremely limited, we just got lucky to snag a spot under one of the two shade trees. Only those who are capable of a short hike on uneven, moderately steep and muddy trails would be comfortable getting on and off this beach, but it’s very much worth the effort for those who are capable!"

"Parking is not at the hotel google directs you too. There is a signed lot just past the hotel driveway.
Bathrooms and garbage cans at the parking lot
Awesome beach of your willing to walk. 70% paved, the rest is rocky mud.
Waves are rugged, strong current when we were there.
A lot of washed up plastic, please help keep the coast clean."

The Allure of Paliku Beach (Donkey Beach)
This beach is celebrated for its wide, crescent-shaped sands and its raw, untamed ocean. While the visual spectacle of powerful waves is a major draw, it also means swimming is often hazardous due to strong currents. Visitors often describe the sand as soft and clean, a perfect canvas for sunbathing or simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Despite its beauty, be aware that shade is scarce, so planning accordingly is key.
Donkey Beach is a testament to Kauai's wild beauty. It's a place where the journey through a lush canopy leads to a dramatic coastal encounter. For those willing to make the short trek, the reward is a sense of discovery and a tranquil escape from the crowds.
Navigating the 'Tree Tunnel' Trail
However, the trail isn't entirely uniform. As you get closer to the beach, the terrain can become more challenging, transitioning to rocky, muddy, and uneven surfaces. This requires a bit more caution and appropriate footwear. Despite these minor obstacles, many visitors find the unique experience of walking through this verdant tunnel to be a highlight, making the effort well worth it for the secluded paradise that awaits.
It's important to note that while the trail is generally well-maintained, conditions can vary, especially after rain. Be prepared for a short hike that offers a sense of adventure before you even reach the sand.
