While the bakery and gift shop receive high praise, some visitors have experienced chaotic and stressful situations during peak times, particularly when picking up pre-ordered items. "We had such a neat experience here-
The staff found out it was our first visit and showed us around- home made pies, quiches, butter, meats, sauces, fudge, buttercream frosting, donuts and so much more! I grabbed a loaf of sourdough and honey butter, half a dozen donuts and fudge. The upcoming Christmas packets for s’mores making and Santa visits.. wish we were going to be in town. They have a new gift shop too- Go check them out!!"

My Life - DIY
"First, I'll say that over the years it has been generally a big positive to have VerHage in our community. The kids enjoy it, we've done field trips over the years, apple picking, etc. The folks that run the cider building are kind and good with kids.
Sadly, I can't do it anymore. Three years in a row, I show up to pick up Thanksgiving pies (that I ordered in advance) and it is the most chaotic, stressful shopping environment you could imagine stepping foot in. This year was hands down the worst.
I show up today at my assigned time, and wait around for 5 minutes because they can't find the pies for the poor lady in front of me. Finally greeted, I give them my name and my order. The older lady at the register was nice. But then another lady comes storming from the back shouting and stomping around. First, I'm accused of not calling in my order, because they couldn't find my pies. Then, she tells me that I must have arrived at the wrong time. (Nope.) "WHAT PIES DID YOU ORDER?!" she barks angrily at me. At this point I reiterate my pie order for the third time and she tells me that one of the pies they don't even stock (they do...it's currently listed on their website.) She then starts yelling at the lady behind the register, and I tell her that she's stressing everyone out, and they're just pies, no reason to be screaming at everyone. "I HAVE TO MOVE 700 PIES TODAY!!" OK, great, how about instead of shouting and swearing at anything that moves, you install a system that keeps everything organized?
Anyway - she finds my pies after 10 minutes of myself and the other employees getting yelled at...of course, she blames the person who took my order for not writing it down correctly. Did I get an apology? Haha, certainly not from that very irate individual, who did find the time to throw her coworkers under the bus. But the kinder lady gave one of my pies for free for the embarrassing scene that I experienced.
Normally this would be a one-star experience...but the pies are the best in Kalamazoo, so an extra star for that, to be fair. Sucks that I won't buy them in the future."
