Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) was established by Sealaska in 1980 at the urging of our Elders, who convened that year to discuss the urgent task of preserving art, languages and traditional practices that were being devastatingly eroded by decades of systemic cultural erasure at the hands of the state and federal government, major religions and the widespread discrimination that defined Alaska...

"I came in and was immediately greeted by John (I think that was his name). SOOO friendly and excited to share his heritage with my son and me.
He took us into a large room and explained each level of the replica traditional home.
There were lots of informative displays along the back wall with old pictures to help explain in more detail.
Although this museum is not very large, doesn't have very many exhibits, it was nice to have a personal guide to answer all our questions....
Except one....
Why is their language SOOO similar to Navajo?
I could read some of their words, they were the same in both languages! :-)

I only gave 4 stars because it didn't have very much on display, but what they had was presented nicely.... especially the room/house.
That was great!"

Low cost for a ticket, and you gain so much knowledge and informative from the tour and exhibit. Definitely stop by when you are in Juneau."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Significance of Formline Art

Formline is a foundational artistic style of the Northwest Coast Indigenous peoples, including the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian. It's characterized by flowing, curved lines and ovoid shapes that create intricate patterns. This art form is not merely decorative; it's deeply symbolic, often representing clan crests, ancestral stories, and spiritual beliefs. TikTok

At the Sealaska Heritage Institute, you can witness formline art in various mediums, from carved wood and bentwood boxes to intricate beadwork and paintings. The institute actively promotes contemporary formline artists, ensuring this vital cultural expression continues to evolve and thrive. Engaging with these pieces offers a profound connection to the region's rich artistic heritage. InstagramReddit

Understanding formline involves recognizing its specific elements: U-forms, S-forms, and ovoids, which are combined in complex ways. The use of color, typically black, red, and blue-green, also holds symbolic meaning. The institute often provides context and explanations, making it easier for visitors to appreciate the artistry and cultural depth of formline. TikTok

Preserving Indigenous Languages

The Sealaska Heritage Institute plays a crucial role in the revitalization and preservation of Indigenous languages, including Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian. These languages faced significant erosion due to historical assimilation policies. SHI's efforts include language immersion programs, documentation of linguistic resources, and the development of educational materials. Instagram

Visitors might encounter elements of these languages through signage, cultural presentations, or even in conversations with staff and artists. The institute's commitment to language is a testament to its broader mission of cultural continuity. Learning about these languages offers a deeper understanding of the worldview and history of the Indigenous peoples of Southeast Alaska. Instagram

SHI's work in language preservation is vital for intergenerational knowledge transfer. By supporting these initiatives, the institute ensures that the unique linguistic heritage of the region is passed down to future generations, fostering cultural pride and identity. Instagram

The Impact of 'Celebration'

Sealaska Heritage Institute is the organizer of 'Celebration,' one of the largest gatherings of Southeast Alaska Native people. Held every two years, this event is a vibrant showcase of Indigenous culture, featuring traditional dances, songs, regalia, and art. It's a powerful opportunity for community members to connect, share their heritage, and celebrate their identity. TikTokInstagram

During Celebration, Juneau comes alive with parades, performances, and workshops. The event draws participants and attendees from across Alaska and beyond, making it a significant cultural tourism draw. It’s a time when traditional practices are honored and contemporary expressions of Indigenous culture are celebrated, fostering a strong sense of pride and unity. TikTokInstagram

For visitors, attending Celebration offers an unparalleled immersion into the living culture of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people.
