Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Gerstle Cove for its beautiful coastal scenery, serene atmosphere, and clean facilities, making it a peaceful escape. However, some find certain campsites unlevel or too far from the ocean, and the unpredictable coastal weather can be a factor. Reddit

"I've stayed here twice now, very lovely campground. I'm giving it four stars because it's extremely windy at times, and though the hike down to the ocean and exploring around that area is awesome, there aren't extensive trails that I am aware of. Still, very nice, I'm kind of on the fence between four and five stars. I'm not going to mention the best site, because it's already almost always booked. Very clean restrooms."

"We recently stayed in Gerstle Cove campground for 2 nights. We were in site 10, and it was horrible for our 25ft motorhome because it wasn’t at all level. (We spent at least 30 mins trying) Also, we were disappointed how far the campground was from the ocean.
We were going to leave a day early, then asked about the area further down the road towards the Day Use area, and discovered we could camp there (we are completely self contained) Finally we could see and hear the ocean from our motorhome. In between rain showers we could easily wander along the coastal trail and see the amazing rock formations.
So from going from one of our least favorite State Park camping ground it became one of our favorites."

"First time here and absolutely loved it - stayed in July and it was still a bit chilly around 50s-60s with slight wind but not as windy as I expected! It actually even rained in the night but it was a pretty light drizzle. Mostly cloudy and foggy when we went but it was a vibe.

Bathrooms were surprisingly VERY clean (for a campground) and didn’t encounter that many bugs! You can buy firewood at wood side for $10 a bundle!

We initially booked 25 but moved to 24 and recommend folks to avoid 25 as it barely has any space at all(attaching image). Short hike to the ocean as well."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Gerstle Cove Experience

Gerstle Cove Marine Reserve offers a unique coastal camping and exploration experience, but it comes with its own set of considerations. Many visitors highlight the stunning natural beauty of the cove, with its dramatic rock formations and the opportunity for tide pooling during low tide. The coastal trails, though not extensive, provide breathtaking ocean vistas and a sense of tranquility. However, it's crucial to be prepared for the coastal weather, which can be quite windy and foggy, even in summer months. Packing layers is essential for comfort. Reddit

When it comes to camping, site selection is paramount. Reviews indicate that some sites are unlevel or lack sufficient space, particularly for larger RVs. Visitors who were disappointed often found their campsites were further from the ocean than anticipated. For those seeking a more direct ocean experience, considering camping in the day-use area if you are self-contained, or carefully researching specific campsite numbers, is highly recommended. The cleanliness of the restrooms is frequently praised, adding to the overall comfort of the stay. Reddit

Beyond the immediate campground, the reserve is a place to disconnect and appreciate nature. The minimal light pollution makes for exceptional stargazing, a highlight for many. While there aren't extensive hiking networks, the focus here is on appreciating the raw beauty of the coastline and the marine environment. It's a destination that rewards those who come prepared for its natural elements and who seek a peaceful escape.

Navigating Campsite Choices

The campsites at Gerstle Cove are a frequent topic of discussion among visitors, and for good reason. While the reserve offers a beautiful natural setting, the suitability of individual sites can vary significantly. Some campers have reported issues with unlevel ground, making it difficult to set up RVs or tents comfortably. Others have noted that certain sites are quite cramped, offering little privacy or space to spread out. Reddit

For those prioritizing proximity to the ocean, it's important to note that not all campsites offer direct views or easy access. Some reviews suggest that sites further back from the coast can feel quite distant. A common piece of advice from experienced visitors is to research specific site numbers before booking or to consult with park rangers upon arrival for recommendations. If you are in a self-contained vehicle, exploring the possibility of camping in the day-use area can provide a more immersive coastal experience, allowing you to be closer to the water and trails. Reddit

Ultimately, a little pre-trip planning regarding your campsite can make a significant difference in your Gerstle Cove experience. Understanding the potential challenges and knowing how to mitigate them will help ensure a more enjoyable and comfortable stay amidst the natural beauty of this marine reserve.
