What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking views from the Smith Mountain Fire Tower and the beauty of the surrounding hiking trails, especially during fall. Many appreciate the accessibility options, including an easier road for families. Some note that trail markings can be inconsistent and that certain paths can become slippery in autumn.
"I have come here a few times now to see the tower and hike the trails. I love this place! The trails are clearly marked, and it is just so beautiful. The water levels have always been too high for us to get to the bench on the island, but we finally were able to get out there, and it was absolutely fantastic."
Breana Boling
"This is moderate to difficult. A half a mile in and a half a mile out. It is well marked on the way in but the blazes are inconsistent on the way out. During the fall, the pine straw can leave the path very slippery so I would suggest making sure you've got hiking boots with good grip and even hiking poles for some of the steeper areas."
Jennifer C.
"Love this hike. Can't say enough good things about it. You have multiple ways to get to the tower. The paved road is easy, the trail is a little more moderate hike. We had 4 eagles flying around at eye level when we went. They were so majestic. Great place for a picnic with the family. Just remember, LEAVE NO TRACE."
