All within 48 hours?! Just got back from an incredible hut trip to @appalachianmountainclub’s Greenleaf, high mountain, hut in New Hampshire’s White Mountains and experienced every type of weather. What a wild adventure. 😝 We hiked up to the Franconia Ridge to tackle the loop! We didn’t want to do it all in one day - and thank goodness because one hour after arriving at the hut the rain came and...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning natural setting of Carter Notch Hut, particularly the picturesque lake and the remote, secluded feel. The clean and comfortable bunkhouses, along with the excellent meals provided by the croo, are frequently praised. Some note the separate buildings for facilities and the challenging final ascent, but overall, the experience is described as pleasant and memorable.

"This hut is small, and all the facilities are in different buildings, making it much less interesting in bad weather. For instance, the toilet is a good minute walk uphill on a trail from the main building, and the rooms building is just a little bit closer. Overall still pleasant. I worked for stay as a thru-hiker, so I am not complaining, just stating facts. Thanks to the croo for having me!"

Christian Papineau

"Wow! Absolutely stunning! Cannot wait to go back. Love the place, the hike and the caretaker!"

Duncan Speel

"Enjoyed this hut very much; it felt very remote, as you really can't see it until you're right in front of it. The hike was fairly easy from the 19 mile trailhead parking lot (which is only 3.8 miles, NOT 19, phew!), although it's quite rocky and steep at the end. My husband and daughter swam in the lake which was nice, albeit cold, and we enjoyed having a room to ourselves (2 bunk beds/4 beds in each room, unlike some of the other AMC huts)!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The AMC Hut System: A Legacy of Backcountry Hospitality

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) has been operating its iconic hut system in the White Mountains since 1888, making it America's oldest. TikTok Carter Notch Hut is one of eight such lodges, strategically spaced along popular hiking routes, often coinciding with sections of the Appalachian Trail. These huts offer a unique blend of rustic charm and essential amenities, providing a comfortable base for exploring the rugged terrain. They are more than just shelters; they are hubs of community and tradition in the heart of the wilderness. TikTok

Each hut is staffed by a dedicated 'croo' (crew) who prepare meals, maintain the facilities, and share their knowledge of the mountains. Staying at a hut is an immersive experience, fostering connections with fellow hikers and the natural environment. The rebuilding of bunkhouses, like those at Carter Notch Hut in 2009, ensures continued comfort and safety for visitors, while preserving the historic character of the system. Reddit

Planning a hut-to-hut trek is a popular way to experience the White Mountains. The huts are typically located 6-8 miles apart, allowing for manageable daily hikes. This system provides an accessible way for hikers of varying skill levels to undertake multi-day adventures without the need for extensive backcountry camping gear. TikTok However, due to their popularity, reservations are crucial, often needing to be made months in advance. TikTok

Navigating the Trails to Carter Notch Hut

The primary route to Carter Notch Hut is via the 19 Mile Brook Trail. Despite its name, this trail is approximately 3.8 miles long and presents a moderate challenge. Hikers will encounter a rocky and steep ascent, particularly in the final section leading to the hut. Reddit This terrain requires sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness. The trail winds through the dense forests of the White Mountains, offering glimpses of the wild beauty of the region. Reddit

For those seeking alternative routes or considering longer treks, the hut is integrated into the broader network of trails managed by the AMC. This connectivity allows for various hiking combinations, including potential routes from other AMC huts or different trailheads. TikTok It's essential for all hikers to consult detailed trail maps and current conditions before their trip. The White Mountains are known for unpredictable weather, and trail conditions can change rapidly, especially after rain or during shoulder seasons. Instagram

When planning your hike, consider the time of year. Summer offers lush greenery, while fall brings vibrant foliage. Each season presents its own unique beauty and challenges. Remember to pack appropriately for the conditions, including layers of clothing, rain gear, and sufficient water, as you'll be in a remote backcountry setting. Instagram
