Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently rave about Yellowstone's breathtaking natural beauty, from its unique geothermal features to its abundant wildlife. The sheer scale of the park and the opportunity to witness such raw, untamed nature are major highlights. However, some find the park can be overwhelmingly crowded during peak season, and the vast distances require significant driving.

"This was my second trip to yellowstone. The first trip was a snowmobiling trip through the park which was amazing. Getting to see the park in the summer time was just as amazing. The views are amazing. Abundant wildlife sightings. The hydrothermal features are so cool to see. The bacterial mats create such beautiful colors. This is such a beautiful park to visit and you could easily spend multiple days here. There are so many things to stop and see and other things to do. There can easily be a lot of walking and hiking if you choose to. Do not miss this park!"

"Yellowstone park, day 1. Stunning September visit to Yellowstone. We only spent 5 hours just inside the west entrance to see a little sample of the park. Could easily stay more days to enjoy the whole park. Sooo beautiful. Blessed to see elk herd and a few bison near dusk."

"I had not been to Yellowstone since I was a child so all I really remembered was Old Faithful. Arriving in mid Sept is a good time to visit since the summer crowds are gone .
We drove through the Lamar Valley which is the best area to see wildlife, did the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone driving loop ( hiking options ) and the loop road from Canyon Village to Hot Springs—Norris-Canyon Village.
We saw Bison, mule deer, black bears, pronghorn, porcupine, fox, wolf and elk. I think I saw a grizzly but it was too far away to be certain.
It was a treat to see Old Faithful go off once again."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating Yellowstone's Thermal Features

Yellowstone is a geothermal wonderland, home to more than half of the world's active geysers and hot springs. The Upper Geyser Basin, where Old Faithful is located, is the most famous, but don't miss the vibrant colors of Grand Prismatic Spring in the Midway Geyser Basin and the bubbling mud pots at Mud Volcano. Remember, these features are incredibly hot and fragile. Always stay on the designated boardwalks to protect yourself and the delicate microbial mats that create the stunning colors. Reddit

The sheer scale and variety of thermal activity are astounding. From steaming fumaroles to boiling mud, the landscape is constantly changing. The distinct smell of sulfur is a constant reminder of the powerful forces at play beneath the surface. Many visitors are captivated by the otherworldly beauty, with the bacterial mats creating a palette of oranges, yellows, and greens against the deep blue water. Reddit

When exploring these areas, be mindful of the steam, which can obscure your vision and make surfaces slippery. The air can also be quite humid. It’s a good idea to have a towel handy and to wear appropriate footwear that provides good grip. Reddit

Wildlife Watching in Yellowstone

Yellowstone is a premier destination for wildlife viewing, often called the 'American Serengeti.' The Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley are renowned for their abundant wildlife, including large herds of bison, elk, pronghorn, and potentially wolves, bears, and coyotes. The best times to spot animals are typically during the early morning and late evening hours when they are most active. Reddit

Patience and a good pair of binoculars are your best friends here. Many visitors report incredible sightings of bison grazing right by the roadside, sometimes causing traffic jams known as 'bison jams.' It's crucial to maintain a safe and respectful distance from all wildlife. Never feed animals, and keep at least 100 yards from bears and wolves, and 25 yards from all other animals, including bison and elk. Reddit

Remember to carry bear spray and know how to use it, especially if you plan to hike. Always be aware of your surroundings. Reporting any unusual animal behavior or sightings to a park ranger is also helpful for park management and visitor safety. Reddit

Exploring the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a spectacular geological formation featuring two major waterfalls: the Upper and Lower Falls. The canyon walls display a stunning array of colors, from pale yellow to deep red, due to hydrothermal alteration. Artist Point offers one of the most iconic and breathtaking views of the Lower Falls and the canyon. Reddit

Hiking opportunities abound in this area. Trails like the Brink of the Upper Falls and Brink of the Lower Falls get you close to the thundering water, while the South Rim Trail and North Rim Trail provide panoramic vistas. Be prepared for some elevation changes and uneven terrain on these trails. Reddit

When visiting, consider driving the South Rim and North Rim drives to access various viewpoints. The sheer power and beauty of the waterfalls, combined with the vibrant colors of the canyon, make this a photographer's paradise and a must-see for any visitor. Reddit
