Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary as a beautiful, tranquil escape offering abundant birdwatching opportunities and well-maintained trails. It's praised as a hidden gem in an urban setting, perfect for peaceful walks and nature photography. Some minor drawbacks include potential weekend crowds at the entrance and the need to bring your own water.

"Beautiful place for bird watching in every season. Now in July we saw lots of common terns and black skimmers (they are as noisy as monkeys), various species of ducks, some snowy egrets, double-crested cormorants, black-necked stilts, coots, and two couples of western grebes. Hummingbirds, mourning doves, Canada geese, sparrows, bunnies do not count 😃 it is an amazingly quiet, secluded place hidden in the urban environment. It is perfect for walks, and great for bird watchers and wild life lovers."

"I love this place and have been there multiple times. The over 300 acres coastal freshwater wetlands will surprise you each time you visit as you wouldn't know what animals you would encounter each time you go.
If you love walking in nature and like to be able to come close to some ducks and birds, this is a great place to be spending a few hours. I certainly spend around 3 hours each time I visit.
Morning is a better time to go as you would see more animals rather than in the afternoon.
I have been there one early morning when it was so foggy, but I was truly entertained by a large group of geese swimming in harmony, and all I heard was their sound, loud and clear. It was such a beautiful morning."

Carlson Trail and the San Joaquin Marsh Loop - 3.1 Miles

Very easy to find the trailhead. Multiple parking spots at the entrance. The trail itself is very well maintained and marked. There are many intersecting trails to extend or shorten your walk as needed. Beautiful views and loads of wildlife. The park is very dog friendly and multiple bathroom locations along the trail."
