What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the gorgeous trails, scenic lakes, and panoramic mountain views, making it a fantastic spot for hiking, fishing, and outdoor recreation. However, its popularity means trails can be very crowded, diminishing the 'wilderness' feel for some. The access road conditions also require careful vehicle selection.
"Gorgeous trails and lakes. Incredibly scenic. Large parking area with easy access. Not much more than an hour from town. Great for hiking, backpacking, trail running, fishing and other outdoor recreation. The downside, of course, is that everyone else loves it too. The trails are incredibly popular, so if you're looking for a wilderness experience to get away from the crowd, this is not your place. I'd compare it to the popularity of the Indian Peaks Wilderness."

"Great place to hike to!"
William Hicks
"One of my favorite places to hike and explore. There are 4X4 and hiking trails that will lead you to a number of lakes and peaks."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Remember to pack plenty of snacks and water, as amenities are scarce. The drive itself can be an adventure, but ensure your vehicle is suitable for the road conditions if you plan to access trailheads beyond the most common ones.
🎣 Anglers
Remember to obtain the necessary Colorado fishing license before your trip. Always check local regulations regarding catch limits and seasons. The remote nature of some fishing spots means you'll likely need a capable vehicle to reach them.
🎒 Backpackers
Be prepared for variable mountain weather, even in summer. Pack essential backpacking gear, including navigation tools, shelter, and sufficient food and water. Hiking Trails and Difficulty
For experienced hikers and backpackers, routes leading to Crater Lakes and Rogers Peak Lake provide opportunities for multi-day adventures. These trails often require navigating more rugged paths and can involve significant elevation gains, offering a true wilderness immersion. It's crucial to check trail conditions, especially in early summer or late fall, as snow can linger at higher elevations, sometimes requiring microspikes.
Fishing Opportunities
Popular fishing spots include the various alpine lakes, where anglers can cast for brook and cutthroat trout. The clarity of the water in these high-elevation lakes provides a unique fishing experience. Remember to practice catch-and-release where appropriate and always be aware of local fishing regulations and licensing requirements.
Vehicle Access and Road Conditions
Travelers often mention that sedans can struggle significantly on these routes, potentially leading to damage. If you plan to explore beyond the most popular and accessible trailheads, ensuring you have an appropriate vehicle is paramount. This also applies to overlanding and off-road enthusiasts looking to explore the area.
