Reviews Summary

The Iceberg Lake hike is overwhelmingly praised for its breathtaking scenery and rewarding destination, with many visitors enjoying the unique experience of swimming in the icy lake. While the hike is long and can be strenuous, its gradual ascent makes it manageable for many. Be prepared for crowds, potential wildlife encounters, and the need for bear safety precautions.

"The hike was SO worth it. The view and experience you get up there is unreal. We went swimming while we were up there. The hike going up is almost all uphill, so coming down was much easier. We are new hikers, but it was really manageable. We saw a moose super close to the trail. I recommend doing this"

Haley Line

"Great hike, lovely view throughout the trail and lots of beautiful wild flowers. The hike itself is moderate, but take lots of water with you. If you want to avoid the crowd and find a parking spot, try to be there as early as you can. We reached the parking spot at 8 and most of the spots were almost gone, however, the iceberg lake wasn’t much crowded so we were able to get a good spot. Also make sure you have bugs spray, cos there definitely was a lot of bugs."

Kalpana Limbu

"One of the most beautiful places at Glacier National Park! Absolutely worth the hike. It’s a very busy trail so prepare to wait or squeeze by other hikers coming the other way in spots and expect plenty of company at the lake. There is often a lot of bear activity on this trail so it does get closed periodically for that so you may wanna check before heading out so you don’t get halfway there and get forced to turn around. Fortunately no issues when I went and had a beautiful, sunny day. Epic!"

Navigating Bear Encounters

Hiking the Iceberg Lake Trail means sharing the path with bears, including grizzlies. It's crucial to be prepared. Always carry bear spray and know how to use it. Make noise as you hike by talking, singing, or clapping to avoid surprising bears. Hiking in groups of three or more significantly reduces your risk. TikTokReddit

If you do encounter a bear, remain calm. Do not run, as this can trigger a chase response. Speak in a calm, low voice and slowly back away. If the bear stands on its hind legs, it's likely curious, not aggressive. Avoid direct eye contact. If a bear charges, stand your ground and use your bear spray when it's within range. Remember, bear spray is your most effective defense. TikTokReddit

Always check the latest trail conditions and bear activity reports from the park rangers before heading out. Some trails may be temporarily closed due to bear activity, and it's essential to respect these closures to ensure both your safety and the bears' well-being. Reddit

The Many Glacier Shuttle System

Tickets are released on Recreation.gov, with releases happening 7 days in advance and again the night before. Using the shuttle not only guarantees your entry into the popular Many Glacier area but also reduces your environmental impact and stress about finding parking. It allows you to focus on enjoying the incredible scenery and the iceberg lake hike itself. Instagram

The Thrill of an Iceberg Lake Plunge

One of the most talked-about experiences at Iceberg Lake is the opportunity for a polar plunge. Even in the summer months, the lake is fed by glacial meltwater, meaning the water is bracingly cold. Many visitors, emboldened by the hike and the stunning surroundings, take the leap for an unforgettable, albeit brief, dip. TikTokInstagram

Be prepared for the shock of the cold water! It's a quick thrill that many find exhilarating. Some visitors even report seeing chunks of ice floating in the lake, living up to its name. It's a perfect way to cool off after a challenging hike and a story to tell. TikTok

While the plunge is a highlight for many, remember to prioritize safety. Ensure you're physically able to handle the cold water and have dry, warm clothes ready to change into immediately afterward. It's an adventure that adds a unique element to the iceberg lake hike. TikTok
