What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Prairie Dunes Country Club is widely praised as a golfer's dream, with its stunning natural landscape and masterful Perry Maxwell design. Players rave about the challenging yet rewarding layout, the unique greens, and the overall prestige of the experience. However, some find the course extremely difficult, especially with firm greens and challenging wind conditions, and note that the dense prairie grass rough can be unforgiving.
"I was very fortunate to get invited to play here with a group of friends. WOW what an amazing course. It’s a golfers dream. I’m a high handicap player so I will say it’s not an easy course but when you are playing somewhere with that quality and history, score becomes an afterthought. The greens were the purist I’ve ever experienced. The staff was very friendly. Pro shop has one of the biggest selections of merchandise that I have ever seen. Which really surprised me due to the location. If you ever get the chance, don’t pass this place up."

"Great layout, one of my favorite. Very tough course that demands keeping your ball in the fairway. I love this hole on the back nine!"

"Prairie Dunes Country Club was an absolute pleasure! When you get a chance to play a classic masterpiece, you want to know you got its best defense. It did not disappoint! The wind was blowing 25-30MPH, and the fairway and greens were firm and dried out. Plus, the greens were running a smooth 14 with these conditions. That means hit your spot, and don't go long. Perry Maxwell's design was perfect, only to be complemented by his son finishing out the final 9 holes. To think he created this course in the 1930s with a metal blade and horses makes you appreciate this treat even more. The par 3's were fantastic, aesthetically pleasing, and difficult all at the same time. How many times are you gonna find a hole named "The Chute"?
Hole number 8 may be one of the best par 4's on this planet. The mounding and dune have your attention off the tee, but quickly, you're demanded to hit an accurate uphill 2nd. Miss all the bunkers and find the green, then the fun starts from there.
Bring your imagination, as you'll need it to putt on the "Perry Swells".
Whether it's before or after the round, or maybe during; I highly recommend the Gunch Punch. If you stop in the card room, you might have the chance to meet the creator of this libation.
This was a treasure in the Plains of Kansas. I wanted to thank the proshop and clubhouse for entertaining us and hope to return one day for another crack at this amazing course."

The Perry Maxwell Design Legacy
The course's design is characterized by its strategic bunkering and undulating fairways that often resemble seaside courses. The natural prairie grass rough is incredibly dense, making accuracy off the tee paramount. Players are encouraged to think creatively and use the course's natural contours to their advantage, a hallmark of Maxwell's designs. The greens, often referred to as 'Perry Swells,' are famously challenging, requiring careful reading and precise strokes.
Visitors often remark on how the course feels timeless, a pure expression of golf architecture that prioritizes strategy and natural beauty over brute force. The links-style characteristics, including the lack of trees and the exposed nature of the terrain, contribute to its unique charm and challenge. It's a course that rewards thoughtful play and offers a deep appreciation for classic golf course design.
Navigating the Challenging Greens
Many reviewers emphasize that the greens are firm and fast, especially when combined with the Kansas wind. This means that approach shots need to be precise, landing on or near the pin to avoid rolling off into the surrounding mounding or collection areas. Putting requires a keen eye, a delicate touch, and a willingness to embrace the challenge. Don't be discouraged if your putts don't behave as expected; it's part of the Prairie Dunes experience.
One specific feature that stands out is the 'Punch Bowl' green on the 11th hole. This design element is intended to funnel shots hit into the surrounding slopes towards the center of the green, offering a unique challenge and reward for accurate approach shots. Mastering these greens is key to scoring well at Prairie Dunes and is a significant part of what makes the course so memorable.
The Prairie Grass Rough: A Golfer's Nemesis
Golfers are warned that finding a ball in this rough can be challenging, and even when found, executing a clean shot out of it requires significant skill. The grass can easily snag clubheads, leading to mishandled shots and further difficulty. Many visitors recount how an errant drive can quickly turn a good hole into a struggle, emphasizing the importance of fairway accuracy.
This natural hazard is integral to the course's links-style character, demanding respect and precision from every tee shot. It's a constant reminder that staying in the short grass is not just preferable, but often essential for a successful round at Prairie Dunes.
