The guided tour, especially the magical boat ride on Lake Venus, is a major highlight. "An easy one hour drive from Albany that's worth the visit. We went on a weekday and arrived for the 11am tour. The parking lot had a lot of available spots.
It was almost fully booked. Purchase your tickets online there or beforehand for the 90 min tour. I suggest going on a tour with less people. Our group was a bit loud.
The tour includes stairs, wet floors, and you'll need good knees for getting in and out of the boat. Bring a jacket along and watch your heads.
This was a really good tour and we really enjoyed the gondola boat ride on the small river inside the cave and the tight walkways of the Winding Way at the end.
There's a nice cafe, gift shop, and sweet shop inside the lodge. We grabbed a quick coffee and breakfast sandwich before our tour. The girl who works there was super nice."

"We loved the caves. It was a little cool but not too cold. I have balance problems from time to time and many areas had hand rails but some did not. I wish some areas had rails to hold on to because you're not allowed to touch the walls. I completely understand but I needed them. It can be dark in spots which made balance more difficult for me personally. Other customers allowed me to hold their shoulders. Lol. Overall, This is a great place to visit."

"To this day, this is the most beautiful and largest cave I have ever visited! 🌿 My family really enjoyed it here. The atmosphere is breathtaking, and the boat ride was simply amazing — truly unforgettable! 💫 I will definitely recommend this place to my friends, and of course, we will come back again whenever possible. Thank you for such wonderful emotions!"

The Geology and History of Howe Caverns
The cave was discovered in 1842 by farmer Lester Howe, who was seeking a cool place to rest on a hot day. His exploration led to the uncovering of this vast underground world. Initially, access was rudimentary, but over time, it was developed into the tourist attraction it is today, offering guided tours that reveal its natural wonders and historical significance.
Today, visitors can explore the main cavern, including the impressive Great Room and the serene underground lake, Lake Venus. The guided tours provide insights into the cave's formation, its discovery, and the ongoing efforts to preserve its delicate ecosystem. The Winding Way, a narrow passage at the end of the tour, offers a unique sensory experience, showcasing the cave's intricate formations up close.
Experiencing the Howe Caverns Tour
A significant highlight of the tour is the underground boat ride on Lake Venus. This tranquil journey takes you across a portion of the subterranean lake, offering a unique perspective of the cavern's vastness and silence, broken only by the gentle lapping of water. The guides are knowledgeable and share fascinating facts about the cave's geology and history, making the experience both educational and entertaining.
Towards the end of the tour, you'll encounter the Winding Way, a more confined passage that many find thrilling. While it might seem daunting, it's a manageable part of the experience and offers a close-up look at the cave's intricate details. The tour concludes back at the visitor lodge, where you can explore the gift shop and cafe.
Lodging and Nearby Attractions
Beyond the caverns, the Schoharie Valley offers a glimpse into rural New York's charm. Nearby attractions include the Old Stone Fort Museum in Schoharie, which details the area's colonial and revolutionary history, and various local farms and wineries. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are opportunities for hiking and exploring state parks in the broader Capital Region.
If you're looking for more adventurous activities, consider exploring Secret Caverns, located just a short drive away. This smaller, more natural cave system offers a different, perhaps more rugged, underground experience. Planning your stay around these attractions can create a well-rounded trip to upstate New York.
