"Had a wonderful experience boondocking on the rim of Badlands National Park. If you like windy days (August/September), beautiful views, happy and friendly neighbors, and zero fees, then BGNG is the place to chill."

"Wonderful National Forest and National Grassland information site. Superb maps. Tom was a font of information for both the local Hot Springs area as well as Boondocking in the badlands, hiking in many areas, springs, etc. Even a place to get homemade and gluten-free food in Hot Springs. Thank you!"

Susan S

"The ranger at hot springs ranger station was not helpful. Wanted to impose his will and understanding of ADA rules and regulations on us. And since we, as disabled Americans were unable to visit the areas we wanted to without accommodations by the U.S. Forest Service, suggested other places further away and some out of even his jurisdiction. I will be filing civil and criminal complaints with the Dept.of Justice and the Dept. Of Agriculture."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Boondocking in Buffalo Gap

Buffalo Gap National Grassland is a haven for boondockers, offering a truly wild and free camping experience. Unlike developed campgrounds, boondocking means camping in undeveloped areas, often with no amenities. This freedom comes with the responsibility of practicing Leave No Trace principles: pack out everything you pack in, minimize campfire impacts, and leave the site as you found it. Many visitors find incredible spots along 'The Wall,' a dramatic escarpment offering breathtaking views, especially when camping overnight. TikTokReddit

Finding a good boondocking spot involves a bit of exploration. Look for existing pull-offs or clearings that show signs of previous use, but avoid setting up too close to water sources or in sensitive vegetation. The windy nature of the grasslands is a key factor to consider when setting up your camp; ensure your tent or RV is securely anchored. While there are no fees, it's crucial to be self-sufficient, carrying ample water, food, and all necessary supplies. Reddit

Community advice often highlights the peace and solitude found in these dispersed camping areas. It's a chance to truly disconnect and immerse yourself in the vast prairie landscape. Remember to check for any fire restrictions before building a campfire, as conditions can change rapidly. The lack of facilities is part of the charm for many, offering an authentic wilderness experience. Reddit

Navigating the Vastness: Roads and Accessibility

Buffalo Gap National Grassland is characterized by its expansive, open terrain and a network of unpaved roads. These roads can range from well-maintained gravel tracks to rougher, two-track paths. While many standard vehicles can handle the main routes, especially those leading to popular areas like 'The Wall,' a high-clearance vehicle or 4WD can be beneficial for exploring more remote sections. It's always wise to check with the local Forest Service office or ranger station for the most current road conditions, as they can be significantly impacted by weather, particularly rain. Reddit

Offline maps are your best friend here. Cell service is unreliable across much of the grassland, so relying solely on GPS apps can lead to getting lost. Downloading maps beforehand or carrying a physical map is highly recommended. The lack of formal signage in some areas means you'll need to be more attentive to your surroundings and navigation tools. Reddit

Accessibility for visitors with disabilities can be a concern. While the natural beauty is immense, the undeveloped nature of the grassland means many areas are not easily accessible. One reviewer noted a challenging experience seeking ADA accommodations, suggesting that visitors with specific needs should confirm accessibility with the Forest Service in advance to avoid disappointment. Reddit

Wildlife Encounters in the Prairie

The open expanses of Buffalo Gap National Grassland are a prime habitat for a variety of native wildlife. Visitors frequently report sightings of bison, often grazing in large herds, and pronghorn, known for their speed and distinctive markings. Keep a respectful distance from all wildlife; they are wild animals and should be observed from afar. Reddit

Beyond the larger mammals, the grasslands are alive with smaller creatures. Prairie dogs are abundant, and their bustling colonies are a fascinating sight. Birdwatchers will also find plenty to observe, with numerous species of raptors, grassland birds, and migratory fowl calling the area home. The best times for wildlife viewing are typically early morning and late afternoon when animals are most active and the light is softer for photography. TikTokReddit

Remember that you are in their natural environment. Avoid feeding the animals, and never approach them too closely. The thrill of seeing these animals in their element is a significant part of the Buffalo Gap experience, so patience and keen observation are key. Reddit
