The popular Koko Crater Tramway will remain closed until City crews can effectively seal access points to the bunkers atop the trail’s summit. This after an 8-year-old boy accessed one of those entry points on July 5, sustaining critical injuries after falling approximately 20 – 40 feet. Upon further surveying, City crews observed three access points to the former military bunkers, placing cautio...

Reviews Summary

This hike is a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience, offering stunning panoramic views from its summit. While the 1,000+ steep steps are a serious workout, most visitors find the effort well worth it for the breathtaking scenery and sense of accomplishment. It's crucial to be prepared with water and proper footwear, and to tackle it during cooler parts of the day.

"This hike is so worth it! It’s over 1000 steps so definitely a stair-master workout but the view at the top is stunning. Take it slow and bring lots of water. It took us less than half an hour to get to the top and about 10-15 minutes getting down and we spent about an hour admiring the views at the top.

We did it right before sunset which I highly recommend as the heat is much more bearable at this time compared to earlier"

Amber L

"I love coming and doing this hike every time I visit Hawaii. Its not too challenging if you go at your own pace. I would highly recommend brining water. You will be thirsty when you get to the top, but the views are so worth it!!"

Majury A

"Warning: REALLY HARD. Anyone who says otherwise is misleading. No shade available in the hot sun. Your legs will be absolutely gassed from the 1000+ steps up and 1000 steps down. 3 different people (one in ROTC so great shape) had to be helicoptered out while we did the hike.

This isn’t like doing a stair master, each step is technical. And then the trek down can be a bit dangerous since your legs are noodles.

Was with some competitive fitness instructors, marathoners, etc and while it wasn’t “hard” for them it was not easy. This is a difficult and challenging hike.

With out of the way, it is also a very cool and unique hike. Climbing the stairs/rail line is different and offers a cool and challenging environment. The payoff at the top is incredible views of the crater and the sense of accomplishment having just bested the rail line.

Definitely would do again, but this is for people who are in shape."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Koko Crater Railway Trail: A Stairway to Heaven (or Sore Legs)

The Koko Crater Railway Trail is an iconic, albeit challenging, hike on Oahu. It consists of approximately 1,048 steps made from old railroad ties, ascending the steep slope of Koko Crater. This unique path offers a strenuous workout, often described as a natural stair-master, with no shade along the entire route. TikTok+1

Many visitors find the climb to be physically demanding, with some steps requiring a higher stride than usual, making it a true test of endurance. The descent can be particularly tough on the knees, especially for those with pre-existing joint issues. Reddit+1 Despite the difficulty, the reward at the summit is immense: unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including Hanauma Bay and the Honolulu coastline. TikTok+1

It's crucial to be well-prepared. Go early to avoid the intense midday heat and the largest crowds. Bring plenty of water and wear sturdy, grippy footwear. While some may attempt it for sunrise or sunset, be aware of the diminishing light and potential for increased difficulty in navigation. Reddit+1 The trail is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, so expect company, but the experience is widely considered worth the effort. Reddit

Safety and Trail Conditions

Recent reports highlight that access to the abandoned military bunkers at the summit of Koko Crater has been restricted due to safety concerns. An incident involving a child falling from one of these access points has led to city crews working to permanently seal them. Instagram+1 While the trail itself remains open, visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution and respect any posted signs or closures related to these structures. Instagram

The trail's construction from railroad ties means there are gaps between steps, and in some sections, there are even larger gaps where the tracks are missing. While alternative paths often exist around these gaps, it's important to be aware of your footing. TikTokReddit The steep incline and uneven nature of the steps can make the descent particularly challenging, and some hikers have reported experiencing significant leg soreness for days afterward. Reddit

Given the strenuous nature and potential hazards, it's advisable to hike with a companion and to inform someone of your plans. If you experience any discomfort or injury, do not hesitate to seek assistance. While some reviews mention people being helicoptered out, this is a rare occurrence, but it underscores the importance of respecting your physical limits. Reddit

Koko Crater vs. Diamond Head: A Comparison

When comparing Koko Crater Trail to the more famous Diamond Head hike, the differences are stark. Diamond Head offers a more paved and accessible path with some stair sections, making it a relatively easier hike suitable for a wider range of visitors. It also features designated rest stops and benches along the way. Reddit+1

In contrast, Koko Crater is a much more demanding ascent. It's essentially a continuous, steep climb up railroad ties, often referred to as the 'stairmaster from hell.' There is no shade, and the terrain is significantly more challenging, requiring a higher level of fitness. TikTokReddit While Diamond Head provides impressive views, Koko Crater's summit offers a more expansive and dramatic panoramic vista. TikTokReddit

For those with bad knees or seeking a less intense experience, Diamond Head is the clear choice. Koko Crater is best suited for individuals in good physical condition looking for a serious workout and a unique, challenging hike. Reddit+1
