"The day we went the owner told us he'd lost electricity so was closed. (reason for four stars) We still had fun wandering around the property and checking it all out. Strange feeling, knowing it was open all the time when Route 66 was thriving and tons of people were driving by. There were still remnants of how things used to be. Hoping next time we can go inside."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Allure of Petrified Wood

Stewart's Petrified Wood and Rock Shop is aptly named, with a significant focus on petrified wood. This ancient material is essentially fossilized wood, where the organic matter has been replaced by minerals, most commonly silica. Over millions of years, buried under sediment, the wood undergoes a mineralization process that preserves its original structure, creating stunning, stone-like replicas. Visitors often rave about the affordable prices and the opportunity to sift through piles to find unique pieces, making it a treasure hunt for rock enthusiasts and souvenir seekers alike. Reddit

Beyond the raw beauty of petrified wood, the shop also offers a glimpse into the geological history of the region. The pieces found here tell a story of ancient forests that once thrived in areas now arid. For those interested in geology or simply looking for a distinctive memento of their Route 66 journey, Stewart's provides an accessible and budget-friendly option to take home a piece of prehistoric Arizona. Reddit

Stewart's Petrified Wood and Rock Shop is more than just a store; it's a piece of Route 66 history. Many travelers consider it a must-see stop, appreciating its enduring presence along the 'Mother Road.' While some parts of the property might show signs of age and could benefit from restoration, this very character is part of its charm. Visitors often note that the quirky outdoor art and the dinosaur displays add a unique, almost whimsical, atmosphere to the place. Reddit+1

The Stewart family themselves are a significant part of the experience. Many reviews highlight their friendliness and willingness to open up for visitors, even outside of regular hours. This personal touch, combined with the eclectic collection of items, creates a memorable stop that feels authentic and less commercialized than some other roadside attractions. It’s a place where you can chat with the owners, learn a bit about the local area, and find something truly unique. Reddit

Ostrich Encounters and Family Fun

A surprising and delightful feature of Stewart's Petrified Wood and Rock Shop is the presence of ostriches. These large, flightless birds add an unexpected element of wildlife interaction to the roadside stop. Visitors, especially families with children, frequently mention the joy of feeding the ostriches, making it a highlight of their visit. It’s a chance for kids (and adults!) to get up close with these fascinating creatures in a safe and controlled environment. Reddit

This animal encounter transforms a simple rock shop into a more engaging destination. It provides a break from the typical souvenir shopping and adds an element of surprise and fun. While the shop itself offers plenty for rock collectors, the ostriches provide an extra layer of entertainment that makes Stewart's a well-rounded stop for travelers of all ages looking for a bit of roadside adventure.
