What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Stone House in Harpers Ferry offers a prime location and historic charm, with many guests praising the home-cooked breakfasts and convenient access to town attractions. However, experiences can be inconsistent, with some guests reporting issues with room cleanliness, maintenance, and water pressure, particularly in the top-floor accommodations.
"Stayed here for one night while bike-packing the GAP/C&O and had the New Room (me) and Top Floor Room (my friend). It was a virtual check-in, with info taped to the door.
This is an almost 200-year old house in Harpers Ferry, so no surprise, there is not a right angle in the place. For perspective, I have stayed at the Town's Inn up the street, and this place is nicer by a *considerable margin. The owner has done a very good job of bringing this house into the 21st Century. Nevertheless, there are some small construction details which should be finished, and my friend in the top floor room had very minimal water pressure.
The location and views are superb, and they allowed the bicycles to be secured on the back porch. A wonderful, nice lady came in to cook breakfast in the AM, which was served at 0830-- a bit late if you have a 60-mile bike to DC ahead of you, but it worked and we left with full bellies. It is right by the train station, but I slept like a brick and enjoyed an amazing sunrise from the balcony outside the room.
I'd stay here again in a heartbeat."

"My wife and I spent three nights at the wonderful Stonehouse Inn. I highly recommend staying there. The Inn is a beautiful old building that has been carefully restored while maintaining the charm of an old home. The Inn is in the perfect location for experiencing Harpers Ferry and all it has to offer. Chris is very accommodating, friendly and knowledgable. The breakfasts were delicious and plentiful. We would definitely stay there again."

The Historic Charm of The Stone House
Travelers often note the lack of right angles, a common characteristic of older homes, which adds to its authentic feel. The restoration efforts aim to balance historical integrity with contemporary needs, providing a comfortable stay without sacrificing the building's soul. For those who appreciate history and unique accommodations, The Stone House offers an immersive experience.
However, it's important to manage expectations. The historic nature means some elements, like water pressure or the quirks of an old building, might not be perfect. Reviews highlight that while the owner has made significant improvements, some minor construction details may still need finishing. This authenticity is part of its appeal, but it's good to be aware of it.
Navigating Room Choices and Comfort
Specifically, the 'Top Floor Room' has received multiple critiques concerning issues like dirty corners, stained bedsheets, broken furniture, and inadequate plumbing and water pressure in the bathroom. The shower's water pressure is frequently mentioned as being very low. Some guests have even reported that the toilet backed up.
Conversely, other rooms, like the 'New Room' and ground-floor options, have been described as 'nicer by a considerable margin' and offer easier access. The ground-floor rooms, while convenient, might experience noise from the kitchen and patio above. For a more comfortable stay, it's highly recommended to inquire directly with the owner about the specific condition and amenities of any room before booking, especially if you are sensitive to noise or have high expectations for modern facilities.
