What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the GTM Research Reserve's beautiful hiking trails, diverse wildlife, and engaging Environmental Education Center. Families particularly enjoy the scavenger hunts, while nature lovers appreciate the pristine ecological preserve and scenic river views. Some minor drawbacks include the need for insect repellent and a small parking fee.
"Wonderful experience! My daughter spent a great deal of time here with the scavenger hunts they had available. They were not just fund items, they were carefully thought out questions and activities to which my daughter fully immersed herself in and learned a ton! She got some cool treasures for her hard work. My favorite part was the adorable turtles in the entry display, and the gorgeous view complete with dolphins a plenty."

"This vast reserve, thankfully saved from development, hugs the coastline from Ponte Vedra Beach more than halfway down to Villano and Saint Augustine. There are several access points, these include one for fishing, and small watercraft such as canoes and kayaks is on the west side of the highway, another for accessing the gorgeous windswept beaches, and another for accessing more than 10 miles of hiking trails. We've tried them all and they are lovely. They all require a very modest parking fee of three dollars (yes they do regularly check that you paid)
The first two are self-explanatory as to what you'll find. The walking trails around the RESEARCH CENTER offer a diverse and very pleasant way to spend even the hottest days. Several of the walks are mostly within shaded areas and as you get closer to the river, there is sometimes a pleasant breeze that keeps down the inevitable mosquitoes and no see-ums that are endemic to our Florida landscapes. Yes, having a little bug spray will likely be useful during much of the year.
The trails are reasonably well-maintained and easy to follow with their color coding. There are even occasional benches (also pleasantly color-coded just in case you're not sure of where you are) none of the walks are very long but you can simply follow different trails to make a day of it. There's even a couple of spots with a bit of beach on the river where picnics are possible and even pleasant with the usual breeze."

"Great trails (aprox. 10 miles) for hiking, trail riding, or running. Very scenic, and very diverse flora. Nice views everywhere and there's hidden benches with great views of the marsh toward the middle of the trail and the river on the outer ends. Trails are long and have various forks - bringing a compass could be handy just in case. Good breeze with the beach and river near by. A near pristine ecological preserve.
Various wildlife can be seen - I saw cranes, pelicans, other various birds, and a small snake. Bringing insect repellent is also advisable as there is a warning of the possibility of "biting bugs" at the trail head - but I wasn't bitten by anything at all.
Prior to the trail head are some nice spots right off the shore for casual fishing, shrimping, and crabbing."
