"In August 2025, we visited the River Bend Overlook Trail at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. In the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, there is a North Unit and a South Unit, and the River Bend Overlook is near the middle of the 14 mile drive of the North Unit. We loved the scenery and wildlife of the River Bend Overlook. We saw bighorn sheep and bison there. Theodore Roosevelt National Park is amazing and memorable."

"This is a nice trail if the bison doesn't chase you.
A little elevation change, no shade if its hot so be prepared with water, hats etc.
Nice view of the little mo and the scenic country side.
Give this review a like 👍 😁 or give it a 👎 but then we can see who supports our parks and the RV volunteers that support them."
Adventure Krewe
"Great views down a short and easy trail. The shelter is beautiful. We'll worth a stop."

Theodore Roosevelt National Park Context
Visiting River Bend Overlook offers a glimpse into the wild heart of the American West. The overlook itself is a testament to early park infrastructure, featuring a charming stone shelter built in the 1930s. From this vantage point, you can truly appreciate the vastness and beauty of the badlands, a landscape that profoundly shaped Roosevelt's character and conservation ethos. It's a place where history and nature converge, offering a powerful connection to the past and the present.
Beyond the immediate overlook, the surrounding area provides opportunities for further exploration. While the overlook is easily accessible, some nearby trails, like those mentioned in TikTok videos, can be more challenging, involving route-finding and loose terrain. This contrast highlights the park's diverse offerings, from easily accessible viewpoints to more rugged backcountry experiences. Always be prepared for the elements and respect the natural environment.
Wildlife Encounters at the Overlook
Another common sight is the bighorn sheep. These agile creatures are often spotted on the rocky slopes and buttes surrounding the overlook. Their ability to navigate the steep terrain is remarkable and makes for incredible viewing opportunities. Remember to always maintain a safe and respectful distance from all wildlife, as they are wild animals and can be unpredictable.
Beyond bison and bighorn sheep, keep an eye out for other park inhabitants such as prairie dogs, various bird species, and perhaps even coyotes or pronghorn. The overlook's strategic location offers a good vantage point for observing the natural behaviors of these animals in their native habitat. Binoculars can greatly enhance your wildlife viewing experience.
