Reviews Summary

Wolf Creek Trail is praised for its easy, paved path ideal for strollers and bikes, offering pleasant shade. However, a significant drawback for many is the strong, unpleasant odor from the nearby wastewater treatment plant, which can detract from the overall experience. Concerns about creek water contamination also limit its appeal for water-based activities. Reddit

"Not a difficult trail. Nicely shaded with the creek running through it 😀."

Linda Curtis

"This is a really nice paved trail perfect for kids riding bikes and strollers, but it has the extremely unfortunate placement of the waste water treatment facility right in the middle of it. The smell of poop really kills the vibe."

Zac Witte

"I cannot figure out why this trail has almost 5 stars - the only redeeming quality is its proximity to the Northstar mining museum and the few picnic tables at the very beginning. As you continue down the trail - after only about an eighth of a mile mind you - you’ll be hit with the pungent smell of sewage and feces that just gets worse and worse and worse as you continue. Because wolf creek flows into a sewage treatment plant that is right next to this so called “trail.” I let my dog drink out of the creek toward the beginning and I regret it - apparently the creek has been flagged for high level of bacteria from feces. Based on all the positive reviews it got, I didn’t even think twice about letting him have a slurp. But take this as your warning - don’t let kids or pets play in that water! My dog threw up a minute after drinking from it. There need to be way more signs and warnings about 1) the sewage treatment plant that is maybe half a mile down the trail and 2) the hazardous water quality."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Smell: Wastewater Treatment Plant Impact

A significant factor influencing the visitor experience at Wolf Creek Trail is the presence of a wastewater treatment facility located along its path. This facility, while essential for the community, emits odors that can be quite strong and unpleasant, particularly during warmer weather or when the wind is blowing in a certain direction. Many visitors report that the smell becomes more pronounced the further one ventures down the trail from the initial access points. Reddit

This olfactory challenge can detract from the otherwise pleasant aspects of the trail, such as its shaded environment and the gentle flow of the creek. It's a crucial piece of information for anyone planning a visit, as it can significantly impact their enjoyment. Some reviews suggest that the smell is a major drawback, overshadowing the trail's positive features. Reddit

Pro Tip: If you are particularly sensitive to smells, consider visiting during cooler parts of the day or focusing your exploration on the very beginning of the trail near the mining museum and picnic areas, where the odor is generally less intense. Reddit

Creek Water Safety: A Critical Warning

The creek that runs alongside Wolf Creek Trail has been identified as having high levels of bacteria from feces. This contamination is directly linked to the nearby wastewater treatment plant. Reviews strongly advise against allowing children or pets to drink from or play in the creek water. Reddit

One visitor shared a distressing experience where their dog became ill after drinking from the creek, highlighting the potential health risks. Despite the inviting appearance of the water, it is crucial to heed these warnings and keep all family members, including pets, away from direct contact with the creek water. Reddit

Important Note: While there are small dirt trails leading down to the creek, these should be approached with caution. The primary appeal of the trail for many is its paved path and shaded environment, not its water features, given the safety concerns. Reddit

Trail Accessibility and Family Friendliness

Wolf Creek Trail is largely considered a family-friendly destination due to its easy, paved surface. This makes it ideal for strollers, young children on bikes, and individuals who prefer a smooth walking path. The trail is generally flat, with minimal inclines, contributing to its accessibility. Reddit

Many visitors appreciate the ample shade provided by the trees lining the path, making it a comfortable option even on warmer days. Dogs are also welcome, provided they are kept on a leash, adding to its appeal for pet owners. The proximity to the Northstar Mining Museum and picnic tables at the start of the trail also enhances its suitability for family outings. Reddit

However, the significant drawback remains the potential for unpleasant odors from the wastewater treatment plant and the safety concerns regarding the creek water. While the physical accessibility is high, the environmental factors might limit the overall enjoyment for some families. Reddit
