What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate the unique beauty of the sand dunes and the peaceful, quiet atmosphere of the preserve, making it a tranquil escape. However, some find the sandy trails challenging, and navigation can be tricky due to inconsistent trail marking and overgrown paths. Seasonal conditions can also impact accessibility.
"Very quiet when I came here late on a Sunday afternoon, not much wildlife or birds, there were some in the trees but very difficult to see but also wrong time of day. Paths are very well marked but mostly sand so some can be a bit hard going underfoot. I did find it very peaceful though despite the lack of action. There were some paper maps at the beginning but the trails are quite short so not difficult to navigate."

"Primitive trail in the winter! Which I was hoping for… a challenging walk 👍🏻. However, as of this review (1/26/25) at least two trail maps do not have the “You Are Here” stickers on the signs. I had no idea where I was. There were smaller, less traveled trails that the locals must use, but quite confusing for a newcomer. Also, with Dewy Hill directly east, why was there no signage for that (other than the sign that read “Leaving Dewy Hill”)?"
Kristin Harrison
"Not a very good spot for hiking. One of the loops we skipped because it had tall grass over the trail and we didn't want to pick up a tick. Some of the other trails were under water and most of the rest were all sand. Not very good for hiking."

Navigating the Sandy Trails
Beyond the sand, trail conditions can vary seasonally. During wetter periods, some trails may become partially submerged or muddy. Additionally, overgrown tall grass can obscure paths, raising concerns about ticks and making navigation harder. It's advisable to wear appropriate footwear with good traction and consider checking recent visitor reports for the most up-to-date information on trail accessibility and conditions before your visit.
While the main trails are generally marked, there have been instances where trail maps lacked crucial 'You Are Here' indicators. This, combined with a network of smaller, less-traveled paths, can lead to confusion for newcomers. Sticking to the most prominent routes or using a downloaded offline map can help ensure a smoother experience.
Seasonal Activities and Experiences
For hikers, winter can present a more challenging and primitive trail experience, which some visitors actively seek out. The sandy terrain, combined with potentially fewer visitors, can offer a rugged and rewarding trek. However, it's important to be prepared for variable conditions, as snow or ice can further alter the trail surfaces.
During other seasons, the preserve is ideal for peaceful walks and appreciating the unique dune landscape. While wildlife sightings can be hit or miss, the tranquility of the area is often highlighted by visitors. The preserve's natural beauty, especially the rolling dunes, makes it a visually interesting spot for photography year-round.
