What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Refugio State Beach for its stunning beachfront camping and scenic coastal views, offering a serene escape. While the basic amenities like token-operated showers and limited restroom supplies are noted drawbacks, the overall experience is enhanced by the natural beauty and the presence of local wildlife. It's a popular spot for families and budget travelers seeking an authentic beach camping adventure.
"Had a great time with my family, but I do have to warn you about the showers and restrooms.
The showers take tokens for warm water. There's only 1 machine on each side of the lake for both bathrooms. They only take card.
Next are the restrooms, no soap or anything to dry your hands with. Be sure to bring your own every time. And to be on the look out for the sparrows above you as you go to the restroom. There's piles of poop under them for a reason.
Besides that, the close proximity to the beach and the relative quietness of the other campers make it a great place to camp. The views and the sounds of the ground squirrels during the day and the racoons at night make each day a adventure of its own.
Don't forget to read about the beaches history with New Spain!"

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Keep an eye out for the local wildlife, such as ground squirrels and raccoons, which can be an exciting part of the adventure for children. Ensure all food is stored securely to avoid attracting animals. The calm waters in some areas can be suitable for younger swimmers, but always supervise children closely. For a more comfortable stay, consider bringing portable charging solutions as electrical outlets are limited.
🚗 Budget Travelers & Hikers/Bikers
While the amenities are basic, the opportunity to camp directly on the beach at such an affordable rate is a major draw. Travelers should be prepared to be self-sufficient, bringing all necessary food, water, and personal hygiene items. The lack of electrical outlets for charging devices is also a consideration for those on longer trips. However, for a memorable and cost-effective coastal camping experience, Refugio's hiker/biker sites are hard to beat.
