If you’re looking for a *slightly* less crowded and treacherous drive, head to Golden Gate Canyon State Park. We hiked the Raccoon Trail and clocked the mileage at 3.3 miles and 500ft elevation gain. Little kid friendly - my 4yo hikes the whole thing and my 2.5yo hiked about 2 miles of it. Things to note: 🎟️ this is a state park so you need a pass or pay for parking 🚙 there is limited parking ...

Late September to early October is prime time for fall colors. Snowshoe Hare Trail is recommended for autumn beauty.Instagram

We’re approaching peak aspen fall foliage in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. This is one of my favorite trails to see fall colors because it’s close to Denver, is a moderate 3.4 mile loop, and is in the beautiful Golden Gate Canyon State Park (entrance fees apply). Although peak timing changes each year, the last week in September or early October should offer nice leaf peeping! 🍁🍂🌲 Enjoy! ✌️❤️🌱🌍 ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Golden Gate Canyon State Park for its exceptional maintenance, clean trails, and well-managed forests. The abundance of wildlife, stunning views from Panorama Point, and beautiful aspen groves during fall are major highlights. The friendly staff at the Visitor Center and campgrounds also contribute to a positive experience.

"This is one of the most beautifully maintained state parks that I've ever visited. The trails are clean and clear, the campgrounds are very tidy, there are multiple smooth paved roads (no potholes!), and the forests are well spaced and managed.

There's a ton of wildlife and fauna to see too. On just one hike I saw a moose, deer, eagles and dozens of different flowers and mushrooms.

Make sure to stop by the Visitors Center as well. The staff were very friendly and helped me (a first time visitor) review a map and gave me plenty of trail tips. There's also a cute trout pond."

"I've visited this park several times for day use. I've never camped overnight here. The views from Panorama Point are incredible! From there you can see the spine of the Rocky Mountains that form the Continental Divide. I hiked the entire Mule Deer Trail, which I thoroughly enjoyed. There are many nice places for picnics. There are many aspen trees for fall color. It is well worth visiting."

"I always come here every year! It's such a fun and beautiful place to camp. I rented a Yurt and it was clean, spacious, a little cold but I slept good and so did my girls. We went on the night tour and it was so much fun. I absolutely loved it and we got to make cup lanterns! The kids loved it! There's so much to explore, so many places to see, and so much to do, even if you just want to relax. It fulfilled all of my camping needs and the little amphitheater was full of surprises daily and nightly! The staff was so great, so friendly and absolutely helpful! The showers are free now and that was super sweet of them to do! We saw a beautiful Coopers Hawk and got lots of pictures. The kids got all their energy out and were ready to go home after staying four days. We will definitely be back again next year!! What a beautiful and peaceful place full of nature! Loved it!!"
