Greetings from Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park @blackcanyonnps ! This is one of Colorado’s 4 national parks. It’s about 2.5 hour drive from Glenwood Springs and it’s a hidden gem. The south Visitor Center was open and there are trails along the canyon but the pull outs to view the canyons are breathtaking. I enjoyed seeing the various rocks and layers formed over the years. "If you don’t like mud don’t come here
It’s really muddy and smells.
There are 2 pools
One is cooler and one is really warm.

I felt safe when I was here."

"One of the nice things about living in Colorado! Free hot springs! A short hike takes you to a rustic setting with gentle soothing hot springs water! Don't need tickets."

"Our favorite little (not-so) hidden gem. The two little pools with natural hot springs are perfect to relax in. Just a few minute walk from the parking spot and you reach your destination. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, it is a perfect spot to unwind. The bigger pool is warmer, and if you go towards the far corner, it is very hot as that is where the springs are coming out of. We've been a few times, there's always someone there..the first time a dude was soaking there fully nude. So just a heads up😆 but overall, it is awesome!"

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

South Canyon Hot Springs can be a fun, albeit rustic, adventure for families. The short, easy walk from the parking lot is manageable for little legs. The cooler pool offers a safer temperature for children to enjoy, but always supervise them closely and test the water before they get in. Be prepared for mud – old clothes and shoes are a must! The natural setting provides a great opportunity for kids to connect with nature, but remind them to be respectful of the environment and other visitors. Reddit

Since there are no facilities, pack all necessities, including snacks, drinks, and towels. Consider bringing a small inflatable toy for the cooler pool if your children enjoy that. In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Natural Hot Springs Experience

South Canyon Hot Springs offers a stark contrast to developed hot spring resorts. It's a primitive, undeveloped site where the natural beauty of Colorado takes center stage. The experience is about connecting with nature in its raw form. Visitors will find two distinct pools, each offering a different soaking temperature. The larger pool is generally cooler, providing a comfortable soak, while the smaller pool, situated closer to the source of the spring, can be significantly hotter. This variation allows visitors to find their preferred level of warmth. The distinct sulfur smell is a characteristic of these natural springs, a reminder of the geothermal activity beneath the surface. Reddit

Accessing the springs is straightforward, involving a very short, easy walk from a small parking area. This accessibility makes it a popular, albeit rustic, destination. However, it's crucial to understand that 'undeveloped' means exactly that: no amenities, no staff, and no manicured facilities. Visitors are responsible for their own comfort and for leaving the area as they found it. The surrounding landscape, with the Crystal River flowing nearby and the majestic mountains as a backdrop, enhances the serene and therapeutic qualities of the soak. TikTokReddit

What to Expect: Mud, Smells, and Serenity

The reviews and tips consistently highlight that South Canyon Hot Springs is not for those who shy away from a bit of grit. Mud is a common feature, both on the trail leading to the pools and around the edges of the springs themselves. This natural element is part of the rustic charm for many, but it's essential to wear appropriate footwear – old sneakers or water shoes are highly recommended. Reddit

The characteristic sulfur smell is another aspect that visitors should be prepared for. While some find it a minor inconvenience, others find it to be a strong deterrent. It's a natural byproduct of the mineral-rich water. Despite these less glamorous aspects, the overwhelming sentiment from visitors is positive, emphasizing the peaceful atmosphere, the beautiful natural setting, and the therapeutic benefits of the warm waters. Many appreciate the free access and the opportunity to experience a natural hot spring without the crowds and commercialism of developed resorts. Reddit
