Timing Your Visit to the Elissa

The Tall Ship Elissa is a highlight, but check its sailing schedule. It's often out on harbor tours, meaning you might only see it from the dock. Booking a harbor tour can be a great way to experience the ship and learn about Galveston's maritime history.

Bundle Up for History

While Galveston is known for beaches, the Seaport Museum offers a deep dive into its past. Dress comfortably for walking and exploring exhibits, and consider layers as indoor temperatures can vary. The museum is a fantastic alternative for a less beach-centric Galveston experience.

The 'Ellis Island of the Southwest' exhibit is lauded for its immersive and informative portrayal of immigration. Many also highly recommend the harbor tours for dolphin sightings and historical insights.

"The tall ship Elissa is a must-see on our trips to Galveston. Tickets can be purchased at the adjacent Seaport Museum. Tickets are for both the museum and the Elissa. There is a cute little gift shop with gift ideas for most anyone. The Seaport Museum has been changed up since our last visit several years ago. The self guided tour guides you through the path of an immigrant coming to America. The exhibits reflect many of Galvestons landmarks. But the best part is boarding the Sailing Ship Elissa and exploring how people traveled back in the day. The crew berths and cabins seem ridiculously tiny to modern eyes. BONUS: the USS Texas is clearly visible across the harbor in dry dock being repaired and prepared for it new berth hopefully near the museum!"
